This may have been covered before, but a quick search didn't turn up any hits.

I heard something from one of the bus companies I'm talking to that bothered me a little. The head wrench said that the company was dumping their MC 9's because they are concerned that they won't be able to pass smog inspection levels (I think he was suggesting that new regs come into effect in 2002???).

He wasn't able to be more specific, or give me anyone else to talk to. I was wondering if you guys knew anything about this, and whether it's something we need to worry about or not?

I assume not since there's been no recent discussion of it on the boards (and I further assumed that maybe this company doesn't like to spend much on maintaining their equipment, hence the problem), but thought I'd ask the gurus.

Thanks,
John

John,
this subject was discussed quite some time ago, maybe on MAK's BB? There was only speculation then and probably only that now. I would imagine that most of our buses will not be subject to emmissions possibly because of their age and that they are in private use (RVs), whereas if I remember correctly, the bureaucrats were aiming at commercial fleets. Can anyone remember exactly what was previously discovered? All I remember is that it didn't seem to apply to us and so I filed it in the delete file.......
Peter.

I remember reading the thread. I think the speculation boiled down to 'no worries'. I can't imagine smog laws will be retroactive anyway. There may some general law forbidding gross and blatent polution (probably already is here in CA) but I would suspect if an engine is running within the specs it was designed for, you should be fine - no matter how old the engine. But I am just guessing too.

Almost every State now does have laws concrening ideling time , and the opacity of smoke coming out the stack.

Regulated by percent of opacity 20% to 30% {rare}, and a hand held instrument is used.

NEW Regulations may affect NO2 emissions and other areas , but dirty exhaust is not legal NOW.

Probably would have to make a real show to have a cop pull your MH over, but in 30 or so States they can!

Do I have to have a smog certificate to register the bus as a motorhome?

Hi John,

Not in any state I am aware of. Some require a certain number of RV things like toilet or cooking appliance, but that varies from state to state. Check w/ your local DMV or MVD. Tell them it is being/has been converted to a motorhome and you understand you need to register it as housecar or motorhome instead of a bus. (rather than asking how to do it) Even still, you may get different answers depending who you talk to. It should be easy though.

Hi Scott,

Thanks for the update. If I recall, you live in CA (is it San Luis-Obispo) also? I live in the "east bay", near Concord. So it's encouraging to know you didn't have a problem.

As you might have guessed, I'm trying to think through the steps of buying and getting my bus home. I agree with your advice about KNOWING what I have to do ahead of time vs. asking! Keeps me in control. I'm going to try to research it further on-line (at the DMV site), then talk with insurance folks and the DMV next week. Any other advice regarding the insuring/registering process, especially as it pertains to CA, would be much appreciated!

Cheers,
John

Hi John,

When I bought my bus, it was already titled. Actually, it was title as an automobile! So I left that part alone. . . When I went to look at my bus, I already had the insurance info ready. When I made the decision to buy it, I used the seller's phone, made a call to GMAC and set-up the insurance right on the spot w/ my credit card. Washed the windows and drove home from Grass Valley to SLO in one shot after a fill-up.

But since you are in CA, I 'think' all you have to do is tell them the bus is no longer in commercial service and that it is being converted to an RV. As far as I know, CA has no requirments for a toilet or a stove or anything else to change the title. Since mine was already titled as an auto, I never had to go in and deal with anything other than a transfer of ownership form. Someday some cop may ask me why it is title as an auto. Guess I'll just tell him it was like that when I bought it - which is the truth.

Hi John,
I just registered a NJ Eagle here in Ca.. I had no problems. Just told them it was a commercial bus, but now a R.V.. No smog requirements to worry about as the bus is diesel.

Have fun, Wayne

Cool, and congrats on the new bus! Where in CA are you?

My blood pressure on all this stuff (registration, license, smog, etc.) has gone way down after getting some sensible advice from alot of the folks on this board. Hope to be picking up my bus the week after Laughlin and driving it home and registering it without a hitch!

Just purchased a 1965 Eagle conversion. The brakes were done only about 4000 miles ago. However sometimes the really squeal. Any thoughts on how to stop this.
Thanks
Bobby

You don't indicate if the bus has been sitting alot before you bought it. If it has been idle, take it out and get it up to 50-60mph and apply the brakes hard to bring it quickly down to 30mph. Do this 10 times or until the brakes smoke. (This is per my Prevost owners manual.) This will clean off any rust or glazing of the friction blocks. It's also easy and cheap! If this doesn't work, it is time to pull the wheels and check for something mechanically wrong with the brakes.

Jim, Thanks for the information. Yes it had only about 2000 miles in the last 18 months. I'll give it a try. It seemed to pull a tad when you first apply the brakes. After driving for a short time in traffic they quit pulling and seem to get quieter. Have good Christmas.
