Hi folks...I've been lurking here for quite a while, learning what I can about the wonderful world of buses! My wife and I are in the market for a bus, and have located the aforementioned
bus in San Diego. From what I've gathered from this board, it would be very wise to have a bus mechanic look over this unit before I decide to purchase it. Can anyone provide a recommendation on a garage and/or mechanic in the San Diego area who would look at this bus?

Also, any history on this bus would be most appreciated.

Thank you.

Alan,
Welcome to the wonderful world of buses!
I can't give you a recommendation on Mechs in San Diego, but, I can give you a heads up on the 4103.
It is NOT an air ride suspension, which suits me just fine, It doesn't have the bells and whistles of it's ittybitty brother, the 4104. It has smaller windows, and you will have a hard time finding windshields for it.
However, it will keep traction where the air ride doesn't, it doesn't "porpoise", it's wiring is much better layed out, (I found that from experience), and I just like it much better.
To put bigger windows in will be a chore, but can be done. To get windshields, well, good luck. The cheapest I've found was $750/each side.
You'll find many things that make the old girl tougher than any of the newer ones and many that make her less desirable.
Take her out for a ride, at least 50miles one way. Before you go, find out what the oil level is, what kind of oil was used, when the filter was changed, the injector size, when the rack was run, air filters cleaned, etc.
Then after your test ride, get back to us with the results, such as does she smoke??? what colour smoke? How long does she smoke?
How does the accelerator feel?
When you get back, is there more oil on the back of the bus?
I have lots more questions, but these are a good start before you ever go to a mechanic.
As for history, Ask JR. Lynch
A lot of the time, you'll find him at the MAK board.
Good Luck,
Dallas

we have a 3703, same suspension as 4103. A very nice ride. Almost everything on these old coaches was made to be repaired and can be. Some parts are getting harder to find. the smaller windows is a plus for us.Good luck

Alan,my name is Frank, and I live in San Diego, and I'm the person that Greg alexander mention a couple of post back.I would be more then happy to talk to you about your converted PD-4103.I have a friend,Bob Rowsell at H.B.Industries that will check out your Convered bus for you.As JL Vickers has Mention, its a Greyhound Bus.I can give you a little more history concerning it.IN the eighties an older gentleman owned it,and to the best of my knowledge, converted it,he either got to old or passed on(I'm not for sure) and let it sit in a storage yard for a couple of years in San Marcos Calif. It was donated to a church, who sold to a fella in Spring Valley, the bus conversion for the most part was a good conversion, the 6V71 purred like a kitten.I'm that fella that lives in Spring Valley,I sold it to another Gentleman a couple years back, who probably is still the owner.....Frank
