Have any replaced anodized panels on GM coaches? How does the finish compare to original? Pretty close or way off. I realize that the original panel finish changes over time. Also how about reconditioned bumper's finish? |

What panels are we talking about. I have a bunch of brand new old stock ( original stuff) you can't match weathered aluminum easily. can get close and closest with original GM stuff. other option is International Bus parts reproduction skin |

Another drawback of the IBC pannels is that the flutting is bent not rolled. |

check with the sheet metal shop in your area as the bigger shops havethe new computor driven rollers that can reproduce the same fluting that is on your bus at a fracton of the pricethe cost that people are asking for GM panels.it is very hard to tell which and the new rolled one have a little lub on them which washs off. i asked for the price on gm pannel and given a price of nearly $400 and the sheet metal shop made the for less than $100. |

John R. you should be aware that the body panels on GM Coaches are made from Al-Clad 2024T3 aluminum, and are not anodized. Electric anodizing creates a .0002 to .003 thousandths surface coating, whereas AlClad is a mechanical proces done during manufacture. A fine, pure aluminum powder (usual method) is applied as the aluminum is rolled to the desired thickness, adding a soft, pure, corrosion resistant coating approximately .020 thick. This coating is sacrificial in nature, and gets a fine patina of corrosion on the pure aluminum that stop/slows further corrosion. Some few buses were produced with an anodized finish for service in heavy salt atmospheres, such as Hawaii and other sea coast venues. I believe Don Schwanke had one of these rare Buffalos To my knowledge IBP's panels are also Alclad, albeit with a much thinner coating than OEM parts. High quality Alclad sheets can be ordered from aircraft suppliers such as Wick's, Aircraft Spruce, Dillsburg, etc. If you live near a major metro area check the yellow pages for local suppliers. For best qualty, scout the various 'Boards for OEM stuff. HTH. Cheers...JJ |
