A friend of mind bought a used car and we went for a ride in it. Stopped at a traffic light and I saw smoke coming from my side of the hood. The dip stick had shout out of the transmission and oil had belched out onto exhaust manifold catching on fire. Found the vent on transmission to be clogged. Removed vent and cleaned, replaced the vent with on more trouble.

Hope yours is that simple.

GOOD LUCK
Paul

Don't know about your HT740, but my HT748 has an expandable end on the dipstick. Trans fluid couldn't get out if it wanted to. Trans fluid would get out thru the vent if the trans became hot.
Good luck with Covington! I've called them in the past and they were worse than no help. Sorta like talking to Beavis and Butthead. Be sure and get an estimate before you start any projects. I've heard of $2-3K spent without pulling the trans?? And in that case, it still didn't work.
Get a trans temp guage and install. Let you know if the trans is cooling.
You may find that a good take-out is a better idea than having a $10K rebuild. HT740s are common...be nice to get a replacement guaruntee in the event it doesn't work correctly. Installing a trans is a one day job...if one knows what one's doing.
You may want to check with Dean's Coach and see what they recommend.
Good luck, JR
