I have a 4151 with a Spicer 7141 transmission. After about 50 miles, the transmission starts jumping out of 4th gear at speeds between 30 and 45 mph. At full tilt (54mph with current gearing) it will stay in 4th. Based on the archive, we have tightened the bellhousing bolts. The shift linkage seems to be adjusted per the manual. The manual also says that after checking the shift linkage, the problem may be internal to the transmission (forks, bearings, thrust washers, etc.). A couple of questions: 1)Based on the symtoms, is it time to rebuild, or replace this transmission? Can it be rebuilt at a reasonable cost, and if so, by who? ( I am located in Orlando, FL). 2)Can I replace the transmission with a Spicer 7141A which was an alternative in the 4151, but the standard setup in the 4104? The 7141A seems to have more widely spaced ratios in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear which would be better suited to Florida (this was originally a west coast bus). Also, a 4104 takeout might be easier to find. 3)Is there anyone on this board that has a good replacement transmission in Florida near Orlando? Tom Biggs |
