You should give the area of the country your in , as its a big cost to travel 2500 miles, leave the coach , and get back in a few weeks when its done. The costs will incude about $1500 for an old tranny , $3000 for a complete rebuild , and a good deal of $$$ to purchase and install cooling , and shifting items. The rear bulkhead has to be cut WAY open and reinforced . Even the rear oil seal on the engine needs changing to the auto tranny version. Expect to pay about $3000 just for the labor. ONLY a shop that has done this many times can be trusted to do the conversion , there are lots of "small stuff" that will make it very unsucessful. The easiest method , if your engine isnt REAL good , is to purchase a running package, all the engeneering is factory correct, and have it installed. IF your interested I know of a 4905 that has rebuilt tranny and good engine for about $2500. Could serve as parts source for shifting and oil cooler stuff and loads of small e$pensive little pieces too. And of course you would get the 2 extra cylinders from the 8V, so the coach will hill climb like heck. BUT Top speed will be reduced about 6mph due to the different gearing inside the auto tranny. Located in New Rochelle NY .Some folks purchase an RTS to be the donor vehicle . IF you love your coach , and can no longer drive your coach with a stick, the conversion is the way to go. However you can purchase a fine MCI 9 for less than the cost of converting your coach. FAST FRED |
