I have a leak in my 740 Allison Auto that was SUPPOSED to have been fixed, but wasn't, so I need some help. It leaks around the shifter lever bolt. I was told by the same mechanic that was SUPPOSED to fix it that it needs a new seal. It leaks after the engine is shut down and the fluid draining back in to the pan reaches this level. He also told me that if you run the engine and work quickly this seal can be replaced before the fluid drains back and runs out the open hole.
Is this a easy fix??
Can it be done before the fluid drains back??
Is this normal for that much fluid to drain back into the transmission??
I just installed and calibrated a new dipstick assembly according to the manual and the fluid level is correct while running cold and hot.
Thanks for all the great help.

if i am not misstaken, the seal is a drive-in type.....there is a seal remover that removes the old seal and an installer that drives the new one in.....you will loose some oil in the process... but not alot....depending on how fast you are... i dont recommend doing it while the oil is hot.....you could be burned....i bought the tools for less than $40.....at a detroit diesel/allison dealer....

Does anyone know if this is a common problem with 740's? I'm thinking of buying a Neoplan with a 6V92 and a 740, so I would be most interested if you folks out there have any input. Cheers...JJ

We have seen several 740's with this problem. We usually try a new seal and this fixes most of them. If it doesn't, then we make a brass bushing to go in the recessed hole in front of the old seal, that will accept a second seal. Tap the brass bushing into tne transmission shift shaft hole and seal with good gasket sealer. The shaft going thru the origional seal can get very small groove worn into it (like a rear axle seal) and leak around the original seal. The second seal we install is futher out on the shaft so there is no grove. Probably not the way Allison would say do it, but works for us and keeps from taking parts out of the tranny. FWIW, Gene R.
