I finally got around to installing the Rostra cuise control I bought some time ago. But it doesn't work, hopefully someone has a magic answer. I've tried all the self tests and they work, so I fairly well know the speed sensor signal is getting to it as is the brake and tach. It never lights the 'engaged' light and the servo never seems to move. I've set the switches for a manual transmission and do not have a clutch switch but I do have the alternator's 'r' terminal connected to the tach input. I suspect I may need to remove the tach signal. If anyone has one working I'd like to know how you set it up. If you can help, please email me off the board with your pone # and I'll give you a call. You are supposed to install a magnetic sensor on the driveline: two magnets 180 degrees apart with a sensor to pick up the signal, and two wires going up front to the Rostra unit. It is not going to work off the alternator (as far as I know). I have a Rostra Cruise control and it works fine with an air throttle system. --Geoff '82 RTS AZ |

Geoff, I have 4 bolts on a front brake drum and a transducer that drives my speedometer. The speedometer transducer is connected as the vehicle speed sensor input to the cruise and the in the test mode the test led flashes as the front wheel is turned (I have the switches set for 2000 pulses/mile) . The alternator is the source for the 'tachometer' input to the cruise. Did you use a tach input? Did you use the neutral saftey switch input? Since you have a V730 I assume you set the switches to the 'auto trans' position while I've selected manual. Regards Jerry 4107 1120 |

Jerry I sell the Rostra Global Unit at bus rallies here in the south east - $199 for the complete control unit and a Dash Mount switch w/engagement light (I know - what a shamless plug) Give me a call - I sent you an email with my # 386...672...0571 Daytona Florida I have a detailed addition installation data sheet with hints and tips that I made up - It's on it's way to you now Diesel don't require a "tack" input - It is not recomended by Rostra - #1 - because the overspeed logic is for gas engines only - Diesel rev range is to small to have an overrev detected #2 - Diesel don't really "overrev" they can go to max govenor setting but not truely "overrev distruction like a gas engine can #3 - But you can wire the neutral safety switch to give you some limited protection Pete RTS/Daytona |

Well I too have a Rostra unit installed. Although it does not have a tach input hooked up & does not shut off on over rev, it DOES have a circuit that drops the unit out if you lose more than 5 MPH & stay that way for more than about 30 seconds. This annoying feature happens when the bus climbs a hill steep enough that it can't hold the set speed. (It happens on many high highway overpasses on the Interstate system.) If anyone knows how to defeat this feature, let me know. The folks at Rostra wouldn't discuss it with me so I guess they feel it's important. |

Jim-Bob If you have the Rostra Global - switch 11 --> Manual/Automatic Setting to "manual' allows longer application of full throttle during heavy loads -Hill climbs) before tripping a reset Pete RTS/Daytona |

Thanks Pete, It IS already set for manual trans. No way to disconnect the "reset"? We did gain a little by setting the engine switch to "4 cyl" and the gain to lowest setting though it makes the control sloppier. |

Jim-Bob - I wonder if that feature is in there to avoid the dreaded "lugging" of a Detroit 2 stroke? I put lugging in quotes as the definition I have for lugging a DD 2 stroke is "the inability to gain RPM when additional throttle is applied". I gather that this can happen anywhere in the RPM band and does vile things to the engine. (Where as most gas engines you would think of lugging as occuring at the bottom end of the RPM band). No actual knowledge here, just pondering. Craig - MC7 Oregon |

I have a Rostra on my Eagle 10 and am pleased with it. I too had the dropout problem, but solved it by making sure the throttle could travel a bit farther than the servo. In a nutshell, the throttle cannot bottom out or run out of travel before the servo. This eliminated the problem. I did this by moving the servo cable attach point a bit lower on my gas pedal. Also, if you have a cable throttle like mine, keep it well lubricated. Pulling 40' of cable is much stress on the servo. I tend to use the cruise control as mainly a throttle assist. I press the throttle down before reaching a hill to spool up my turbo. The cruise does it when the speed drops. That is too late for my little 6v92. Overall it works fine and the price is so much less than a King control. Pete, I hope you can get Jerry's problem solved. Please post the results for all of us to see so it will be archived. David |

Tips from a Rostra user (and it works good): Which switch do you have? The little dash mount unit is exactly backwards in setup from what the installation instructions say regarding choice of "open" or "closed" circuit swith setup. Make absolutely certain you are on the brake switch and not one of the many other switches on the bus. I use one magnet on the drive shaft and at the lowest pulse per mile setting. Less seems to work better on this because I originally tried 2 magnets and this did not work so good. You may want to try 2 bolts if possible or even one if this does not leave you with an imbalance issue. Try the switch issue FIRST! |

Craig, The Rostra unit is a universal car/truck unit. I don't think Rostra ever imagined anyone would use one of these on a 12 ton bus! David, I will check mine. The servo is installed at the top of the engine compartment & the cruise cable pulls only the governor throttle arm which does not work the throttle cable. But I'll bet mine does run out of travel before the servo does. I'm sure I was trying to get the last gnat's hair of engine throttle. (A 4104 needs it all.) |

I used to have the same problem with my King Control. I had the cable too tight and it would drop out on any hill where it had to hold the accelerator wide open. Sure was a bitch finding this problem! All it needed was just a tiny bit of extra so that the cable never pulled to a stop. Richard |
