Just check the oil on 730 Tranny on the 4905, with the engine running and both warm. No oil showed on the dipstick. Stopped all and cooled a bit and the oil on the dip stick was up to the point that says Use Dexron oil.
I had the bus out and ran it about 50 miles tranny shifted real good and showed no problem. Anybody got any ideas? is this a problem ? I always checked it cold before. Larry 4905

Larry,
It's best to check the trans level when hot. My 730 manual says to get the tranny up to temp (160 to 180 degrees F), park the bus level and check. Add fluid to it right on the stick(my term)
You can't just let the bus idle to bring it to temp. It needs to be driven. Also, engine temp doesn't exactly correlate with trans temp, so a 30 minute or so drive under normal conditions should get her 'ready' to check.
Cold check is just to make the tranny safe to run until it gets to temp for a proper check (hot).
Always check the level at least twice....

I have 'da book' for 730 if you'd like it, email me at the contact above my name.
hope this helps-Chuck Lott

What does "add fluid to it right on the stick" mean?

Within the indicated normal parameters for the current operating temp of the transmission.

Larry, does your dipstick have a cold line on it, or just a hot line?

My V730 has both. I'd have to look at the manual, but I think the range between the dots is a full gallon.

I've read here on BNO that it's better for fluid to be reading low than reading high. Seems to overheat when running too much fluid, although it seems counterintuitive.

Like Chuck says, get the fluid up to temp (this takes awhile), get it level, put it in N and check the fluid.

Add a quart at time to hit somewhere in the low range of level and you'll be good.

Curious what your avg. MPG is with the 4905+V730+ 4-3/8 rear end and at what mph/ rpm. In one flatland trip so far (2000 miles) I've averaged 7.5mpg at 68mph @1950rpm.

I Know on my 740 Has to be running. Trans fluid will drain back into the pan when parked. Unlike engine oil trans fluid should be drained after sitting for min of 6 hours so you can get it all drained This was recomended to me by an Allison service man.

Hello Larry & Lynne

The V730 does a good job of "informing" the driver when it gets too low on fluid.

It won't shift into 3rd.

Now, whether this is a condition to get in if you own and have to pay to maintain....

And it never happens when it is a short way to the next exit! lol!

Here in big transit, found many none the worse for wear after topping up.

Fill it to the proper level. Allison put those levels on it for a reason.

happy coaching!

Had new air compressor instaled a month ago boy its nice to have it working rite. Thanks for help 4905 Larry

Larry,
While your bus traveling, if possible, check the trans fluid level at few different stops to get a baseline of what the level is doing, then you'll have a good idea about whats going on with the fluid level. If you have a non contact thermometer (they are so handy) you could check the temp on the trans oil pan and see what the temps are averaging. I would think the pan temp would be real close to the fliud temp.
Enjoy your trip!
