G'morning,

I'm in LA right now. I noticed on some of the school buses, there was a large unit on the roof, maybe 10' long and as wide as the bus, marked "Carrier", in the carrier A/C font.

Does anyone know anything about these units? Is it like the OEM air conditioner attached to the engine, or more like our RV style roof top A/C's?

My mind is on cooling these days. It was 90 degrees in my house today with the central air running hard all day. I ended up putting two window units and a 10k BTU portable A/C in. Southern California is the wrong place for me right now. My office is cooled down to about 68 degrees now. I'm happier.

I can't work on the bus, because it's still at the shop, and I'm waiting for a few things first. All I can do is keep my eyes open, and keep planning on things.

I noticed similar units on some of the area transit buses, but I never noticed a brand name. I'm guessing that the ones on the school buses were afterthoughts.

Are these large units something that I should even look for, to put on my bus? I was pretty much settled on getting two or three regular RV roof units, but....

I found this on the carrier site:

AC 131 - 12/24V 100/55A
http://www.transportaircon.carrier.com/details/0,2806,CLI1_DIV8_ETI237,00.html

The AC 310 and AC 350 indicate the compressors are driven by the engine.

Are these anything I should even considering trying to find, or a waste of my time?

JW, those units look interesting indeed as a coach heat/AC replacement. A big bus alt. would have no problem keeping up with it.

For park heat/AC, it might be another story. Since it's a DC unit, a charger might not be able to keep up with it and not harm your batts. (55A @ 24v= 1320w) Maybe a big Trace unit could handle it.

Interesting...

JW, the roof mount unit is only one half of the system I believe. You still need a compressor which would be running off the engine. This would be great for running down the road but would leave you without any A/C when you stop and park for the night or the week. Certainly is a clean look though.

Richard,

Ya, that's what I was afraid of. The other two were marked as such. I was just hopeful that the one I linked was different.
