With diesel fuel the price it is, I was wondering if anyone has decided to try to use Waste Vegtable Oil (WVO) as a fuel substitute. Would like to know any results which may or may not have happened. I understand a person needs to filter and heat the oil before it gets to the engine. Any thing else? Thanks, John H. Dodge

John, there's all kinds of sites with information on WVO use.

I've seen reports that Rudolf Diesel first ran a diesel on peanut oil. Keep in mind that diesel fuel is a substitute for the peanut oil, not the other way around.

Anchorage and Ketchikan, Alaska municipal governments are using it in their trucks, so I think it's just a matter of being prepared, like with most things.

Oil companies of any stripe only get the prices they do for fuel because we pay it. The most recent news item on OPEC makes it clear that they are very much aware of that.

I'm about two days away from having my WVO setup complete.

I'm going to run the bus for a week or so without any oil to make sure I don't have any coolant leaks (*that* would suck), and then I'm collecting oil and switching over!

But to answer your question, there are *many* people who have converted and driven buses on WVO, I've seen a load of them around here, and they all run fine. Check my site in a week or two to see if my bus explodes or not. :-)

WVO is a very viable alternative fuel but the practical applicability for the individual is starting to disappear.

Here in the Pacific Northwest a local potato chip company has become a major investor in a WVO conversion plant. The WVO facility is making bio-diesel and selling it at the retail pump.

In order to have the supply of WVO necessary to make the conversion process work the fry oil is no longer purchased but leased. The WVO facility delivers clean new fry oil and picks up the WVO.

In other words, free WVO is starting to become a thing of the past. So much so that a locally owned burger chain has now switched over to leasing their fry oil.

So while I applaud your effort to reduce your fuel costs while at the same time reducing your vehicle emissions, I think the WVO ship has sailed.

I will be running my bus on WVO for sure. My VW rabbit loves WVO and I did the conversion using tractor supply and lowe's parts.

Have 7000 miles on vw rabbit on wvo 10,000m on 2000 dodge truck many hours on my farm tractor and about 4000m on 81 eagle with 8v71, 2500m on my new MCI102A3 6v92t. I have made all my own stuff from local hardware stores and have had great luck with it!
