Anyone price a B500 transmission lately. I was wondering what they cost. What does a used 500hp Series 60 cost?

What would a new B500 and Series 60 500hp cost?

You probably could buy the whole package together from DD Allison distributor. Maybe you could buy the parts used in the new buses.

Many people are always interested in doing this type of swap… I was wondering if anyone has recently priced out the parts?

Thanks for any info

Hello

The first of the buses with S60 and B500 are getting on in age. Early/mid 90's buses are really coming down in price, as the used bus market returns to a more sensible balance now that the lengthen (40 to 45) and widen (96 to 102) craze is far enough behind us.

It might be more economical to buy a donor bus, than to find the drivetrain already out, especially a badly damaged one.

Same as in the auto end. Wrecker charges more for the motor than the whole car is worth, if he takes it out!

As for 500 HP, it is rare to find a motor set up that big in a bus. Only the entertainers are prone to that fuel sucking foolishness. Remember, a bus was originally for making money, not burning excess fuel!

happy coaching!

For most it would likely work out far easier, quicker & cheaper to just buy a used coach already equipped from the factory that way and use the money from selling what you currently have to put into the conversion end in the new coach. It is far more than just "four bolts" to "swap out" and re-engineer an old 2 stroke MUI to a modern Series 60 than just getting all those parts and unbolting them from a salvaged 102 D and bolting them into a MC 9 or 8. Not meaning to pee on your desire, but the old expression "if you have to ask what is involved, it may be a far bigger task than you may wish to contemplate". Of course there is always some time well spent in the thousands of hours you will need to spend just to understand how to do such an up-grade and weather your current skills and financial resources will endure such a huge undertaking.
My best guess to buy and fabricate all the hardware new (far more than just a new engine/transimission for $50,000)could easily run up around $100,000 before your labour to assemble/modifey/adapt it all and work the bugs out (if your starting with a MC 9 or older model).

Ho Greg ...I've seen take-out B500's for around 5K and S60's with 300 to 500K milage for around 8K.

I would look at a M11 than a S60, way less work to get it into the hole, it about the same lenght and about the same height, so you wouldn't have to modify the back of the bus to get it in. The M11 can be reprogram for 400+ hp for an RV app.

I would buy the wreaked truck with the M11 in it and get all the parts out that you need and sell the rest of the truck to a wreaking yard. Then buy a used B500 /w a torque converter.

It will cost you between 15 to 25 K depending on how lucky you are with finding the right truck for the right price, and if you can do "All" the work yourself

Ron
