Hi, I really need some good advise to pass on to my husband. Two years ago we bought a 1977 MCI-5c. We were really excited about this new project. We have purchased almost everything to put in our coach. Unfortunatley my husband has lost his excitement and has listed our Coach for sale. I was almost in tears the other day when a couple came to the door... We are still waiting on their final answer. I really want to experience it to its fullest potential. Does anyone have any words of wisdom to share with him?

Alison, from my own past experience I can tell you that I too purchased a bus because I wanted one and then once it was home, it just sat there and sat there. Susan, my better half who I HAD to talk into this hobby repeatedly asked me, or more like badgered me, when and what was it I was going to do with it other then let it sit in the driveway. Finally, I guess she got fed up with my lack of interest and started researching conversions on her own. Well to make a long story short, she started doing things to the bus on her own. If you knew her as I do, you too would feel bad if she hurt herself because she has a real hard time with power tools, cordless ones at that, so feeling bad AND kind of guilty, I pitched in, and after getting started, we found ourselves arguing on HOW it should look and HOW it should be done and I eventually took over. Now 3 busses later, we have gotten along better than ever and we have what we feel is the bus of our dreams. I just hope when this one is done, I wasn't asleep thru it all! :-)

If YOU want to keep it and see it thru, do what Susan did and jsut get started. It sounds like you have enough items to get going and if you need answers on where or how to do it, you obviously know the place to ask...here and on MAK's board!
Just because your a woman doesn't mean you CAN'T do it without him. Once you start even if it's the wrong way, he'll eventually pitch in and help! It DOES help though if both of you want it bad enough and with two people sharing the load, it trakes half as long! I know I get pretty bored doing some of the things without her here with me if all she does is sit there and keep company! It just makes it go a lot easier!

HTH and good luck...

Ma'am,
May I suggest you tell him that the bus does have a new owner.... Alison comer.
If he wishes to dispute the fact, well, you know what to do.
Next put bus items on the Honeydew list.
If that still doesn't work, sell the used husband on eBay for what he thinks he's worth.
then buy a used husband for what he's actually worth.
That will leave you lots and lots of cash to pay for the conversion.

Ace... comes to mind we're seeing a ....kinder....gent'ler side of you.....:-) :-)

I've only done one....am 5 years into it, this month. and doubt it'll ever be done.(Probably 95 percent at this point). I keep finding more things to add and do. Just now adding diverter valves at Lav and Galley sink. Having said that, we use it in much comfort. In 2004 a trip to Nova Scotia....and planning a re-run soon.

Thanx for a great response.

Alison, When you have time to stop and think about the project, it can be an overwhelming feeling. I would suggest that you together get to some converted coach rally's. I gaurantee that you will be welcome and being around these folks will cause the spark to get going again. I am second generation busnut Mom and Dad's was a 49flx and this eagle is our third.
Godspeed,

I find that the secret is to micro-manage. Treat every little sub-project as "The" project and try not to think about the rest of what needs to be done. When that little project is done, celebrate and move the next project.

If it starts getting overwhelming, just walk away. I left mine alone for an entire year, then got back on it. I though about selling. Even went RV shopping. I wanted an RV but I was feeling like the bus was never going to get done. Looking close at S&S RV's was usually enough to get me motivated again on the bus.

Alison
Tell your husband I think he is a whimp if he gives up working on and not finishing your dream bus. I have been working on mine now for 4 solid years, drove it only 100 miles and am still plugging along to "Git-r-done". He needs to participate in our Busnut bulletin boards, get ideas, ask questions and submit his ideas. None of us has all the perfect answers although some of us think we do. Kick him in the butt, remind him how enthuastic he was at first to do this and talked you into it also I am sure.

Oh, another thing not pertaining to Alison's Husband. It has to do with ACE. For anyone who has not had the opportunity to actually talk face to face with ace and meet and drink, and eat with him and his great wife you don't know crap about him believe me. I have had this opportunity and know he can be very compasionate for others and passionate for his projects and helping friends. I am grateful for this board for introducing me to ACE and Susan. I am proud to refer to Ace and Susan as our Friends and hope more of you take the opportunity to meet up with this rough exterior pussy cat!! Look forward to seeing you in Timmonsville guys in October.

Alison -

What is your husband's reason for losing his excitement with
building his own bus conversion? He must have given you some
explanation, right? Why not share that with us?

The price of fuel, and the time it's taking me to do anything
with our bus, takes it's toll at times. I have to store it at a
storage facility, and they've narrowed the spaces to 10' widths,
making opening bay doors impossible. I've almost given up....

The only incentive for me, is that it's cheaper for me to finish
the bus, than it is to buy a commercially made one with the
features and storage space I want. And... most commercial
motorhomes get around 5 mpg, where the bus gets 9, with
three times the living/storage space.

Let us know what your husband's reasoning is, to sell it off,
rather than finish it. Maybe one if us can offer some advice
that will make him feel a bit better about the project?

But, his thoughts should be more important to you, than what
any of us bus bunglers think. It's his life, and yours.. not ours!

Sorry , bus conversion is a HOBBY , if he doesnt want to spend 1500 or 2000 hours of his off time doing a conversion , THATS IT!

On boats the same syndrome befalls loads of folks , they dream of how 'Great" its going to be , and mistakenly thing that by purchasing a pile of stuff , there progressing on their way.

Their is a feeling of achievement & progress with the decision to purchase ,(the research & price hunt) and the joy of the UPS guy bringing a little Christmas every so often.

IF you get out of this anywhere near whole it will be great luck , as unfinished projects and piles of stuff seldome bring their purchase price.

Each converter wants "MY WAY", so what you purchased may not match the next folks dreams.

If your lucky , fine bus campers , finished , that can suit your needs are not that expensive.

Sell what you have and see if its the 2000 hours of hard dirty work that was the problem.

If thats all it was , you will be on the road in less time!

Hope we all see you there, shortly!!

Whoa! Fellas, hold on here a minute! This thread is about Alison and her husband wanting to sell the conversion that she wants to do, not about me! I'm pleased to see the responses from those that consider me a friend and not so much an arse and the feelings are mutual, but what we have here is someone that has asked for help. I think all of the replies so far have been directed to her in positive ways and we have to keep in mind as Freddy suggest, and that is it's a hobby! Remember the child that YOU want to be a baseball star or anything for that matter and if you force the issue to benefit YOU? Keep forcing and they lose interest fast and then all together!
Of course it's just my opinion but hey if it was up to me and I already had the stuff to start it, I would, over selling it! Stuff comes to hard to just turn over and sell again! I guess that's why my shop looks like it does! :-)

JJ... dude you need a woman BAAADDDD! :-)

If the bus runs ..just take it around town and enjoy it ..go to the concert in the park or a state park for the weekend , you need not go on a long trip, just enjoy it localy and that gives a good peace of mind in working on it. you bought it to enjoy so go and injoy it and the work seemd lighter on the mind.

When my wife and I decided to buy a bus conversion
we agreed that it would be a "WE" thing right from the start and if either one of us changed our minds the other wouldn't get all snottied up about it...the bus would go.

She has Carte Blanche (as long as it doesn't get to Prissy) with the interior, the woods, fabrics, etc.
I get the whole undercarriage and outside (right..like she's gonna wash that elephant) and the fuel bills.

What was almost a complete conversion is now virtually a shell and she's doing a great job in
selecting what she wants done. I give my input as far as utilizing every inch of space (it's only a 35' bus) and she plans that into her designs.

Usually it's the gals who get weary over these projects from what I've read in the archives and I took a lesson from that.

Here's hoping the road ahead stays nice and smooth
as it is now.

My heart goes out to the gal and her husband in the original post. If it ain't together..it ain't no fun! FWIW,

I really can't offer much more than advuess to change your husbands decision as we have not heard from him. If I were in your shoes I would just buy his 50% share out and do the conversion by my own resources (as you want to keep it) That would certainly respect his wishes and his choice on the matter (regardless of the reasons for his loss of interest in the hobby).
If you don't have all the skills , resources , tools and time/energy to do the conversion and you think your husband may be able to shore your efforts up you can always hire/swap for his services latter.
Of course you may find taking on the project yourself leaves little energy left over for current priorities like bedroom intimacy and house work, but you can always repay that time after your done converting the coach and reimburse your spouse the fun/pleasure interest you had to divert into completing your project by inviting your husband to enjoy your finished bus conversion.
Good luck and take charge of your own desires!

Me too.
But you'll not likely attract a keeper that is already occupied. This I am sure off.
As much as "we in great need" don't want to remain silent and miss out on any chance to end our singleness forever!

I don't need a keeper, but I don't want a rental either....There's gotta be some ladies out there who'd like to travel the country in a luxury private coach. How's that for sugar coating it. :-)

PS...My mother calls it the "Rock Star Bus"
