Hi
Has anyone ever put a 8v71 right hand turn truck engine into a Bus. Some tell me I can and some tell me it won't work. Is it the same block? I have been told all that has to be done is change the cam timing and swap the engine ends. Has anyone ever done this?

Hi Murray,

I have never done it and don't know what is involved, but I am pretty sure I read in Da Book that the block itself is made very universally so that you can run it in either direction and make either end the 'front'.

Murray -

If you're talking about putting a RH truck engine into a GMC without changing the rotation, then you'll have four speeds in reverse and one speed forward.

If you're talking about putting this RH truck engine into an Eagle, MCI, Prevost, or any other T-drive coach, it will work fine as is.

Altho I haven't had the need to do it, it is my understanding that you have to pull the back end off the engine to flop the camshaft idler gears in order to change the rotation. (And while you're in there, set the timing to "A" so you can run N65 injectors and boost the HP from 275 to the proverbial "318".) There are some other things that need to be changed also, but I'm having a "senior moment". . . 8^(

I am sorry for not being more specific. It is a V drive 1979 GMC model H8H649. The same as a 4905 as far as I can tell. The truck I am about to purchase is a 1979 GMC brigadierre. Would like too make sure that I can make the motor work in the bus before I purchase it.

Thanks to all of you who have responded.

The block is the same. The crankshaft oil holes are different because of where the connecting rod is when the piston fires. The hole of a RH engine will be directly under the rod bearing when turning LH. NOT recommended. You will NEED an LH crank to put in if you want any life out of the engine without putting a rod through the side of the block. Not totally sure, but I have heard the cams are different, not just reversible.

I repowered my 4905 last year and I had to look high and low for the left hand parts to do it I had a left engine that had a bad cam gear. Clark DD ha dthe right part number but the wrong part Marked as a left and turned out to be right turn. Look for left turn first.

In the inline 6-71, the cams turn the same way whether right or left. The timing gear on the crank & the idler above it are different. The teeth angle the opposite way because the idler drives the opposite cam gear for left rotation, thereby keeping the cam gears turning the same way. There are two mounting shafts for the idler gear.
Good to know about the crank oil holes!
