I believe that it's a prime example of the world famous but little known Damifiknow. Flx windows, GM Newlook front end, Crown? twin screw, Superior or Carpenter body. It was probably begat by a mad bus converter in his secret labratory! "Igor, Activate the Switch"! |

It looks to me like a Carpenter body bus although I have never seen a three-axle Carpenter before. The vintage looks like 60's to early 70's. Carpenter squared up the rear of the body in the early 70's. Optional on a Carpenter was the curved glass on the windshields. Standard was a four-pane flat glass windshield much like Crown or Blue Bird. Carpenter, like most of the other school bus body builders, made a commercial line of buses. They came from the factory with coach type windows, activity or coach type seats, luggage compartments, etc. Since it is sitting so low it would appear as if it might have an air suspension. The only really puzzling thing is who made the chassis. Carpenter never made their own chassis and depended upon vendor supplied chassis. It appears as if it has a mid-mount engine since there is no radiator grill in the front or the rear of the bus. If it does have a mid-mount engine I have no clue as to who supplied the chassis to Carpenter. IHC and GMC, among others, made a lot of chassis for Carpenter buses but they only made front or rear engine chassis. Since Carpenter buses were made in Mitchell, IN the only guess for chassis builder would be Oshkosh or perhaps FWD. In any case, depending on who made the chassis and what power package it has it might actually be a pretty good buy at $900.00, particularly if it runs. Mark O. |

to me it looks like a mix between a crown, gillig, AMG and a newlook. almost like someone had 4 or 5 different parts buses and decided to make their own. also, the twin screws look like they're spaced just a tad far apart, almost like one of them was added. seems like the duals on most of these older ladies seem to be withing inches of each other. this looks like its on the better side of a foot. I'm waiting on an email from the owner and ill post as soon as I know what it is. |

Hey Ron, Madsen Safteyliner? At least you seem to have heard of Madsen before. I have been around buses a long time and I don't think I have ever heard of that brand. Any idea of where they were built, when they were in business, etc.? Do you know if Madsen built their own chassis or was it a vendor supplied chassis? I still say the body looks like a Carpenter Built Bus. I wonder if Thomas got after them for brand name infringement since Thomas has used the Saf-T-Liner name since I don't know when. I am also wondering if the third axle is a non-driven dual axle. I would agree that from the picture it would appear as if the axle spread is a little far apart for a dual drive. If the bus runs, for $900.00 it just might be a pretty good buy. Mark O. |
