We have a 3600 watt inverter in our bus. We have 2 large deep cycle batteries hooked up in sequence for 24 volts. We plug the bus into the shore power and start the inverter. The red light goes on and off at the remote indicating it's charging the batteries. If we leave the inverter on when we are not at the bus, it boils the water out of the batteries. If we shut off the inverter then the batteries go dead and we lose all our electric 110 and 12 volt. Could there be something hooked up wrong? Could someone explain to us how an inverter should work? If the batteries get charged by the inverter, shouldn't the charger shut off? When the bus is plugged into shore power and the inverter is shut off, shouldn't we be getting 110 volt power? |

Never the less as far as the charging problem - You should have a three stage charger - depending on the battery type (info furnished by battery mfg) you should be able to set the charger for bulk, absorption and float voltages - first thing I would do is check to see if the charger settings match the mfg recommendation - of course i'm assuming your batts are ok - are they new? have you had them load tested? are they a matched set? - how long does it take to discharge them between charging? |

I think you summed it up with your last statement: "When the bus is plugged into shore power and the inverter is shut off, shouldn't we be getting 110 volt power?" The answer of course, is yes. It sounds like your transfer switch is inoperative. Are you manually turning the inverter off? Is the transfer switch is part of the modified sine wave inverter? Should it remain "on", to do the transfer of power? You might want to check the grounds. A loose or defective ground can cause any auto-transfer switch to fail, along with causing problems with the charging circuits. |
