A friend of mine told me a supposedly true story about a guy that was his friend. This story probably happened 25 + years ago in the rural woods of Michigan. Anyway, this guy liked to shoot off some dynamite on the 4th of July each year. Each year he would like to add some more sticks in order to top the explosion from the last year. One year he finally had to big an explosion and was just a little to close. When my friend saw this guy, he was shook up and could not hear very well. The guy decided to smoke a cigarette. As my friend watched him he noticed that smoke was coming out the guys ears. He asked my friend, “Da Ya thunk I hurt anythin” ? Happy July 4th and don’t use too much dynamite. |

Hmmmm.. I gotta wonder if it's possible. I guess if the ear drum blew out, the smoke could go through his eustation tube, and out his ear. I blew out an ear drum on a flight just under a year ago. Hurt like a mother when it popped, but I'm guessing the concussion from playing with dynamite may be distracting enough to not notice. I'm a smoker, and no one said anything about seeing smoke coming from my ear. If I ever blow out an eardrum again, I'll make sure I have someone look carefully. I would really prefer not to pop another one. I've done a lot of stupid painful things, but that had to be the worst. I'll be playing with morters again this year. I love those damned things. |

I may be weird, but the lift charge awesome! Sometimes better than the fireworks. |

You can in fact blow smoke through your ears if the tympanic membrane is ruptured. This is not recommended because the tar and nicotine may retard healing of membrane. I had a cousin that did that all the time. He was a teenager and was unable to hear well because of this. (Message edited by Rod on July 04, 2006) |
