I just replaced the 8v71 in my '77 AM General. I was trying to start the engine by using the starter button located in the engine compartment. When I push the button I can hear a switch engaging in the main circuit breaker box but the starter motor does nothing. I tried shorting the starter and all it does is make a whirring sound. It does not engage the flywheel. I'm hoping that it is something simple that I have missed otherwise I'm pulling the starter out. If ya'll have any suggestions for me they would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Steve(77AMG)

Steve,
The starter and solenoid that engages it are serviced as a unit & your solenoid isn't working properly. You'll need to remove the starter and have it rebuilt. Hopefully you'll find a local shop that can rebuild yours, be sure to tell them it's for a left hand rotation engine and your bus's voltage. I just had mine rebuilt right here in Somerset Ky. & it cost $165.

I would check all your electrical connections to the starter, including batterys before taking it out.

dont pull the starter out just yet, try hooking one of the little post on the solenoid too a hot wire, make sure that you have a strong battery

Steve Blue grass gave you some good advice, on the solenoid there are 2 small terminals - one is a ground the other is a the hot side and there are the 2 big posts one is ground the other is the lead from the battery, you may also have a post no the end of the starter that is a ground post that is hooked to the engine block. the small terminal lead goes to this post. once you have checked that you have all the wires hooked up correct then try your starter button again, then check to see if the button up front works and if it does and the back one does not then you have a bad circuit between that button and the starter sel. take a test light and follow the circuit from the button towards the starter until your light does not lite and you have found your trouble. if neither button works try shorting the big post of the starter to the small terminal of the sel. this will activate the starter so be sure that your bus is blocked and the tranny is in nutral and the brakes are on. check and be sure that you have battery at the post on the starter with your test lite also as you would not be the first one to pull a starter and then rember that they had the switch thrown into the off position. mel 4104

"2 big posts one is ground the other is the lead from the battery"

This sounds unusual to me. If this is the case then would not the solenoid be shorting the battery directly to ground?

I am not really familiar with how starters in busses are wired, but I would suspect that the other big lead is going to the starter.

if the starter is spinning,it's working.if it's not engageing the flywheel it's the solenoid,I would not rebuild the starter till it needs rebuilding, but, some people have lots of money to spend

Steve,

You only mention the rear starter switch.

Have you tried the front one?

Glad to hear you have the engine back in since I saw the bus.
