Are any additives for fuel or oil recommended to improve performance of a Detroit Diesel V8 engine with about 50,000 miles? E.g., to "clean" the fuel system, injectors, remove carbon buildup, etc.
I am a newbie who is purchasing a Neoplan Metroliner (AN340) bus which has been converted to a motorhome which accommodates handicapped persons. I will be driving the bus about 1,500 miles to bring it to my home and would like to use whatever additives your experience has shown to be appropriate and effective. I would appreciate recommendations of product brand names and whatever opinions or comments you may have.

Don,
You don't need nuttin' in there other than good diesel from a reputable truck stop. Also important is to keep your tank topped off to minimize condensation e.g. moisture in the fuel. Change your fuel filters early and often. Your driving habits will have the most effect on the engine's health. Assuming it's a 2 stroker, don't lug it. Keep the oil topped off. As I'm sure you've gathered already from what you've read DD 2 strokers use more oil than you might expect. This is normal up to a point. If it is a 2 stroke DD, Use only straight weight CF-2 rated engine oil. 40 weight is probably the most agreed upon but some use 30 or 50. It's not always readily available so grab a case of it before you hit the road. etc. etc. Read through the achives for much info. Which type of DD do you have in there? If it's a turbo remember to let the turbo "wind down" at slow idle for a few minutes before you shut down the engine. Welcome to the club. If you don't have a manual for the bus definitely get one. These's a lot to consider but I think that covers a lot of the basics!

From what I have read on these boards over the years the additives are a waste of money. With one exception. After a day of sitting in the street and $200 becuse of an algee problem. I will now be using BioGuard. Buying a bus that you do not know much about or has sat for a long time. I really would suggest useing an algecide. You cannot purchase this at most truck stops. It use to be available at Tractor supply, the only place to find it that I know of is Marine type places, Boat US ect.

There is nothing wrong with fuel injector cleaner, I prefer POWER SERVICE,available at truck stops and at wal-mart,one gallon is about 15.00 ,money well spent, every once in a while, AND in winter, keeps fuel from congeling
