My husband has discovered why the replacement tranny leaks so much. The cover is cracked. We have the part tranny under the bus, and the cover on that one looks okay, but first, how to get the thing off, and second, will they match? More importantly, is this even doable? I hazard to guess if we can drive it over another mountain as is, as it made it just barely to our property. AAAGHH! This transmission situation has now cost us something like $6,000 between take-out, labor, and towing (AAA didn't cover the tow- now we have Good Sam's) Does anyone know if switching the good cover on the bad tranny for the bad cover on the good tranny is possible? Thanks again! |

Okay- he got the cover off- it looks brand new inside, so...next we search to see if we can get a new seal for the cover! I'll be calling US Coach monday, I hope Luke can tell us where to get a seal! Everyone who told us to keep that old tranny was right! Where would we get that cover otherwise? |

Peg, Just get a tube of Permatx "Ultra Copper" RTV silicone sealant. It will probably work better than the paper gasket that was there. Good Luck! Dallas |

We can swap out the one cover for the other- both are VS2-8's. I know some of the tranny parts are busted and/or swapped off the old one, but the cover looks much better on the old one than the replacement. There is a visible crack in that cover, near a bolt. Oil is definitely leaking from the crack. So- Permatx Ultra Copper all by itself would be as good as a paper or fiberglass seal? It must be similar to the copper spray my husband uses to seal gaskets on our trucks, right? I am not sure if he will go for that without some other opinions on it...there were also copper washers around each of the bolts where the nuts connected to the cover on the old tranny, whereas there were definitely no such copper washers on the replacement tranny. Are they something we can find, as they seem to have the same effect copper usually does in this case, and work as a seal. Also, does anyone know how often you have to change the oil (if using motor oil rather than red tranny oil) in one of these? Now that we are having MORE trouble with the transmission, we want to be extra nice to it. I got accepted as a vendor at the NY state fair and America's Fair in Buffalo, and we are planning on finally putting our bus to work now. These show fees are steep, so we want to baby the bus until we can afford to have it looked over for possible issues. |

I am a face and body painter and henna artist (temporary dye for the skin.) I tried unsuccessfully to get into the MN State Fair for 3 years (I guess you have to wait for someone to die to get in) but got in on my first try at these shows. It seems as though it was the right decision to move to NY. Both NYS fair and Buffalo's America's Fair pull in over a millon people. |
