VDO tach hookup help please. One of the good guys here was kind enough to send me a used vdo tach. I think it's a VDO 333533 - it looks exactly like this one: http://shop.torresen.com/ships_store/index.php?p=details&mfc=VDO&sku=333533 There was a paper sticker on the bottom of the gage with hookup instructions, but it got wet and i can't make it out. It's a potentiometer type, no dip switches. There are 4 blade terminals on the back. From left to right: + (plus sign) Letter "S" over a number "1" downward arrow (ground) Letter "S" next to downward arrow (ground) There is also a socket in the back to stick a little light into, I know what to do with that. I assume that once I get the thing hooked up, I borrow a handheld tach from work and use the potentiometer to calibrate the thing. What I don't know is how to hook it up. Help please - what hooks to what? I think I know what to do with the + (12 volt from the batt?) and the ground seems pretty straightforward, but what is S1? (one of the lugs on the gen? which one?) S ground? (huh?) I searched the archives and struck out. Thanks in advance - chipping away. Howdy Casper, This may help...the S1 wire is connected to the sender. On the Spicer 4-speeds, on top of the transmission housing (above the bevel gear) is a sending unit attach point (a male threaded stud). You may have one (a sending unit) on it already. They mount with a swivel nut (about 7/8 or 15/16) and have a drive pin similar to a speedometer cable. The top of them looks like a little generator (which they are). They came in 8:1 and 16:1 ratios...only the very early trans. used the 16:1. It will have 2 or 3 pins (wires)...S1 and (-) and ?. If they are not labled try them with a millivolt meter with the engine running to find the one with sender output... it won't hurt anything. The VDO should read the 8:1 sender correctly...that's standard for truck transmissions. REMEMBER! The 4104 is POSITIVE ground unless it's been changed over, so the connections to the tach have to be correct for polarity. |

Sorry Casper, As I clicked the above in to your post I realized I scr__ed up. So now you have everything you need to know about hooking up an electronic SPEEDOMETER!! For the tach, you need a magnetic pick-up/sender to screw into the bellhousing (most have threaded 3/4" holes all ready to go) to pick up flywheel impulses. The problem is that the tach needs to be programmed (or already be) for the number of teeth on your flywheel. OR, you may need to install an alternator with a S1 terminal. Humbly, Rdub |
