My school bus/work truck has a NA Detroit 8.2. It sat for about 3 weeks. When I started her up she blew a lot of black smoke. Lots of black smoke, sort of like a smoke screen. Cars were scattering like ants. After about 10 minuets and 3 miles I got on the Interstate. The smoke cleared up real quick once I got up to speed. She ran just fine and sounded the same. I have been driving her at least once a week now and she has not smoked me out. Could the excessive smoke be caused by a leaking injector? The smoke was black like too much fuel. |

The injection systems on a diesel are not likely to cause way too much fuel to be injected without warning, so I would look for an air blockage. For what it's worth. Tom Caffrey PD4106-2576 Suncatcher Ketchikan, Alaska |

Nope hardly any idleing. I also put in a new air filter 4 months ago and it still looks new. I mostly have driven it on the interstate about 30 miles to town. It sat 3 weeks and then smoked me out. We are going to steel tent camp today. She has sat 1 week so I will see if she does it again. We are going up about 7,000 feet. Of course not having a turbo it will smoke some. |

Mike - I think I recall someone (Gary?) having a stuck / leaking injector on a pancake installation. As I recall, it allowed fuel to leak and caused problems. You may be on to something there. Maybe some injector cleaner? Not sure what kind of injectors you have as my DD experience is limited, but I used to pull the injectors from my Case 2590 (big turbo six) and John Deere 2950 tractors and clean them up with a cleaner I would get from the tractor dealership. Maybe you can try the same? Craig - MC7 Oregon |
