I am restoring a 35 foot 1968 Prevost Champion which was converted in 1985. The previous owner did not remove the original air conditioning unit which no longer works. I am planning on removing the unit to make room and lighten the load. (It takes up a whole basement compartment) Has anyone out there dealt with this? Any thoughts, suggestions???? Thanks,...Manfred |

I purchased a converted Prevost too. It has the bus air which needs a refrigerant charge, but otherwise it appears to be functional. However ... I think I may pull it out to recapture the bay space. The main fuel tank is in the middle of that bay, so I won't get the entire bay, but at least I will have more room for "stuff" and "things". I figure if I need a/c while driving down the highway, I can run the genset to power the front Cruisaire. I know, it seems a shame to trash such a beautiful bus air system, but the maintenance costs are hefty on those dudes, and they weigh a ton. Removal is not going to be a picnic ... lots of pipes and wires. Some of the wires I will leave, and also the pipes can become conduits for whatever other wiring I may run for do-dads that are needed in a fully equipped conversion. I only wish there was a market for the two DC motors and that massive Carrier compressor. |

I've always thought those big DC motors would make a cool electric go-cart or scooter. . . I have two that I want to do something with at some point. Scott |

Have seen a good sized air compressor belted to an old blower. Makes it easy to Air Up and leave a campground with out Hi Ideling {which hurts the engine} and waking all the pilgrims up. FAST FRED |

My 40' LeMirage has only driver air and it is adequate in New England in 80 degree or so temps with the sun shining. Since I converted the system over to R-134a and had it charged, I haven't used the roof airs at all going down the road. In Arizona in the summer that will probably change. Pull the bus air and leave the driver evaporator and put a small compressor in to run it. The Prevost parts book will show you what you will need. Plumbing should all be there and, with relatively minor modifications to the piping to eliminate the bus air portion, it is just a matter of the small condensor mounted in front of the radiator, the compressor and probably changing the hoses to R-134a compatible ones. Compressor and hoses are about $1000 from Prevost. Probably cheaper if you had them made up locally. Just a thought to make your decision a little more difficult LOL!! Jim |

How hard would it be to take an automotive AC system and hook it up to the bus engine? Would it be an easy way to have 'coach air' without all the big clunky equipment? Scott |

A company called WELCH Ind outside of Atlanta sells a kit to do exactally that. Everything is sized for a coach, not a car, will even install it in the Atlanta "off " season, all winter. Cools the dash , and foward portion of the coach, enough to get down the road in comfort . FAST FRED |
