Hello Everyone! Before my question, I would like to thank all the great people on this board that have helped our group and it’s project get to where it is today… done! We could have not done it without you all! Thanks! Well, as some of you know, our Mobile Command Post we where building from an old MAN 1400 series articulated bus (with original MAN diesel & RENKE tranny) is complete and in service. Yippie! It has been a long haul, but we didn’t quit! If you would like to have a look at our completed vehicle, you can check it out at: http://www.theaov.com/semoc.htm Let me know what you think! BTW, we WHERE able to license it as an motor home through the State Patrol (some of you where asking about that). Now for the questions… The winter is our traditional down time to fix up equipment, install new, and maintain the coach. Since we have had the vehicle, we have not had to add and/or change oil, transmission fluid, or lube the chassis. Since we have had it, we probably have put less than 500 miles on the vehicle. However, we plan on putting quite a bit more miles on it this spring and summer, and want to have a good starting maintenance “base-line”. Therefore, we have obtained new air, oil, and fuel filters for the unit, and plan on greasing the chassis. The problem is, the entire lubrication section of the manual is missing. So, we talked to several mechanics, watched this board, and gleaned as much information as we could from many sources as to the types of lubricants we should use. We would like your opinion as to if we are on target as to what we have come up with, or??? So here we go: ENGINE OIL – From portions of the remaining manuals, we where able to glean this (remember, these manuals are from the 70’s): “A. Engine oils must conform with MIL-L-46152 API-CC/SE or CD/SE specifications. Oils that meet these specifications are: (1) TEXACO Havaline (API-CC/SE) Ursa Super Plus (API-CD/SE) (2) EXXON HDX Plus (API-CC/SE) XD-3 (API-CD/SE) (3) CHEVRON Delo 200 (API-CC/SE) Delo 400 (API-CD/SE) B. Single grade oils possession the following viscosity classes should be used in accordance with the following out side air temperatures.” I cannot re-create the table here, but if we read it right, it states that you may use 30 weight for outside air temperatures between +23F to +86F. The mechanics we spoke with at Metro (the coaches former owner) stated that we should use Unocal Guardol 40WT. The cross reference on the above came back to: 76 Guardol QLT Monogrades – Premium Universal Fleet Engine Oil Which is right, or??? WHEEL AND CHASSIS – No data available from manual (section missing, unable to replace yet). Metro mechanics state to use Unocal Multiplex EP2 or Chevron Ultraplex ULGIE. The cross reference on above the above came back to: 76 Multiplex EP Grease – Multipurpose Lithum Complex Grease Again, does this sound right? DIFFERENTIAL – No data available from manual (section missing, unable to replace yet). Metro mechanics state to use Unocal MP Gear Lube LS 80W/90W The cross reference on above the above came back to: 76 MP Gear Lube – 80W-90 Again, does this sound right? TRANSMISSION – No data available from manual (section missing, unable to replace yet). Metro mechanics state to use UNOCAL HTF Input please! POWER STEERING – No data available from manual (section missing, unable to replace yet). Metro Mechanics state to use Unocal Multipurpose ATF Dextron III. Input please! ENGINE COOLANT – No data available from manual (section missing, unable to replace yet). Metro Mechanics state to use “NALCOL” Input please! Since my bag is electronics, and not engine/coach maintenance, and I was chosen to write this email since I sit at work all day and can do it, please don’t beat me up to bad for asking questions that will probably seem like child’s-play to most of you veterans. We just want to make sure we do it right the first time! Thanks to you all for any input you can provide. We REALLY appreciate it! Sincerely, Mark Email: aov98@yahoo.com |

Congrats on your new coach. I would feel very safe in using products that the former operators of the coach used. By way of offering some info that may be helpful to you - the API spec stands for American Petroleum Institute. They grade the various POL products (petroleum/oil/lubricants) and assign a class number regarding the different applications. In a diesel, you are interested in the CD/CE/CF etc. SF/SG/SH applies to gasoline engines. In grease, EP stands for extreme pressure - good for bushings and bearings - BUT I would use a wheel bearing grease for wheel bearings not an ep. For gear lube if operating in cool temps I would go to a 75W90, and for below zero make it synthetic - the difference in amazing. For the trans I am guessing the Unocl HTF stands for hydraulic transmission fluid? Best to stick with what is in there now until more info can be obtained, as a mix may not deliver adequate lubrication. Dexron III is the standard - I would not worry about mixing brands at all. And Nalcol - I have no info on this product at all. Hope this helps. Good Luck |

I'm Putting my info in quotes " xxxxxxx" from the man 9000 artic maintenance manual WHEEL AND CHASSIS No data available from manual (section missing, unable to replace yet). "Multi purpose grease, Lithuim 12-hydroxystearatype with EP-additives. NLGI grade 2, dropping point 356 fahrenheit" Metro mechanics state to use Unocal Multiplex EP2 or Chevron Ultraplex ULGIE. The cross reference on above the above came back to: 76 Multiplex EP Grease Multipurpose Lithum Complex Grease Again, does this sound right? DIFFERENTIAL No data available from manual (section missing, unable to replace yet). "SAE 90, or SAE 80w-90" Metro mechanics state to use Unocal MP Gear Lube LS 80W/90W The cross reference on above the above came back to: 76 MP Gear Lube 80W-90 Again, does this sound right?
