anyone know of a mechanic in the northern CA area that can do a swap in an '81 LeMirage w/ an 8v71 and a manual tranny to a S60 and a B500? this is for a close friend of mine and money isn't really an object in this matter. we're just trying to keep this project as local as possible(we're in sacramento), but the closest place I can think of is Southern Oregon Diesel. thanks for the help!

South Oregon Deisel would be a great place to have it done at just contact Dave and ask your questions from him and get honest answers and if they do it they will stand behind any work that they do on the coach.they have a nice shop and a good staff and have worked on coaches for a long time and are DD reps so have the parts or can get them. also it is a nice area to visit while the work is being done.

I also recommend SOD.

They have a covered shed where they can do the work. My wife and I stayed in the bus for over a week while they were doing some work for me. We had a toad so we could visit all the neat places in the area and had a place to come back to to eat and sleep.
They did not charge a camping fee either. LOL

Guess I'm glad I didn't answer this this morning, I would have said nobody would do that swap.what is he going to do about rear-end gearing with the slower turning 60 series, I would guess it needs to be about 3.00 to 1

Bob, you may be entirely correct. It might not be feasable at all for all I know. LOL I just know that if it can be done SOD can do it. I have seen them put Cummins in several Eagles.

Hello.

Series 60 and B500 is popularly mated to a 4.56 rear gear in the new coaches.

IIRC, B500 4th is 1:1, 5th gear is around 0.7 overdrive and 6th is 0.64:1 .

Mating a S60 to a HT740 is a problem for engine rpm with 4th gear 1:1.

Only problem for the '81 prevost swap is physical: whether it will fit in without extensive structural mods and driveshaft length.

happy coaching!

Kyle, I could be wrong here, but having an 82 Prevost, I was told that the Series 60 engine is 12 inches longer than either a 8V71 or 8V92, which means the rear of the bus must be extended. You might ask someone else who has tried it! Good luck! Pat:

I removed my 8V-92 and 747 and installed a S60 and B500. I had to lengthen the body 11 1/2". But that is on my Neoplan with an independendent rear end and there was suspension bracket issues. Perhaps with a straight axle tag you wouldn't need to go that far, but there will be some lengthening required. Sometimes the driveshaft can be shortened, but from the factory engineers I talked to they said don't go shorter than about 16" and even then you'll feel the vibrations. Big job, you'd better be up for it!

Kyle... I would take a look at a M11 with a B500 tranny. The M11 is not as tall or as long as the S60.. it's a way easier fit. You can get it bumped up tom 450 hp.

Hi Kyle
I was recently at BusNUSA where I met Dave of Southern Oregon DS. Great guy and knowledgable. I have a 91 LeMirage and wanted to do the swap. It can be done but because of angles of driveshaft, etc. the bus would have to be extended a mininium of 2 feet. Definately doable but significant expense. If money is no object then buy a shell with S60 and B500 already in it unless your friend is partial to the 81.

thanks so much for all the replys, ill pass along the info. that's why I love this board so much. the '81 Prevo has sentimental value to my friend (his uncle converted it), so that's why he's willing to spend the ca$h to do the switchover.
