Thinking about trying the plastic welder Harbor Frieght has on their website. It is cheap but thought it might work for the few times I might use it. Can anyone enlighten me on this? |

It is the same exact unit the plastics people want $150.00 for. The adapters will even fit it. I bought the harbor frieght one and had trouble getting it to work; bought the expensive one and had trouble getting it to work also. Yep, inexperience, and an expensive lesson. Ray D |

Keep in mind, as mentioned by Gumpydog, you'll need a "speed tip" to make its use practical. For an overall perspective, go to Gumpy's site, www.gumpydog.com and follow the threads on the tanks. |

These plastic welders are very good when you hook them up properly, make sure the air stays on long after you unplug the electric for cooling that's the secret to making them last! Marc is correct about that speed tip, it will cost you about 80 bucks, but its worth its weight in todays price of gold, just ask Gumpy! Pat http://prevostlemirage.blogspot.com/ |

Do not use air, if you use nitrogen it welds much better. I adapted the regulater off my wire welder to power it. Ray D |

Ray, I have nitrogen available, but considering the cost, and trouble to have the tank refilled plus how much it takes and what size job you are doing, I'd stick with air, its cheap, easily supplied, and does a really nice job! Pat |

Ray, I agree Nitrogen is best, but You can avoid alot, if not most, of the oxidation problem you've experienced with better heat control in the hot zone and moving the tip along. The major reason I got myself a Lister "pro model" welder. It has enough watts to heat the area quickly and thoroughly. |

Howdy Gents What kind of items are commonly welded with plastic welders, and can they be used on a variety of different plastics? And how in Hades do they work? Is there plastic rod like an arc welder, or just a hot tip and you melt both sections together? Can someone explain the workngs of a "speed tip" and why it is so much better than the stock "slow lazy tip"? Patrick, covered in grease and stinking of diesel in Fresno |
