Guys: On the previous thread about "oil change in 8V71", you all gave some pretty good advice. I went yesterday to get the filter and oil to change out the oil to straight 40W. One major problem. I went to Wally World, Sams, AutoZone, Advance Auto, O'Reillys, TruckPro, and every oil distributor in town. None of them carried, in stock, either Rotella 40 or Delo 100 in 40. I found plenty of 30W, but would that benefit me that much? I did find the Texaco Oil Distributor to have Ursa Super Plus in 40W. Not knowing anything about it, I went to the Texaco site and pulled it up. It says it meets the requirements for Detroit 71 series. Have, or do, any of you used the Texaco Ursa oils and how does it stack against the Rotella or Delo? Also, I found the local Shell Oil distributor had some Rotella straight 50W. I went onto Detroit's website and they do have this as one of their recommended oils. However, the ambient temps for 50W cuts off at 45 degrees F. In North Mississippi, we only have a couple of months where temps would be below that, and then only sporadically. Would 50W be OK to use? I have a block heater that would help, I suppose, with cold weather starts. Would I run 50W in warmer months, then to 40W or 30W in winter? Please give me your thoughts. I can order the 40W and have sometime next week, but it will be in 5 case minimums to order. |

Hey Buddy, Find a NAPA store. They can order Delo by the gallon or case. Also Ursa oil will perform well in Detroits as we have used for years at Turman's sawmills. We have an oil truck deliver it to a 500 gallon tank we use to service the fleet. Just make sure it has the CF-2 rating. Dale |

I am thinking 50W is just a little bit on the heavy side. At 50 degrees I think it is going to be pretty heavy going when you try to start, even if you have the block warmed up. I have used Ursa oil but I found it tended to drip out of all of the knotholes more readily than the Delo. I just find it hard to believe any Chevron distributor not having Delo 100 in stock. I too have been able to get Delo 100 from my local NAPA store. It usually is about 10-15% more expensive than if I go to the Chevron distributor however. Good luck. |

50W probably would be ok mixed with 30W until you can find some 40W. I finally found Rotella T 40W in Home Depot, of all places, and it is $7+, a very good price!! Marine stores carry Delo 100 and Rotella T in 40W but they are expensive. I ran WalMart's 30W for six months before I finally found some 40W. WM's 30W Heavy Duty All Purpose oil in two gal jugs is CF-2. Although it is light for hot weather I plan to use it in the winter. You sure can't beat the price. I tried to get the manager to order me some 40W but he wouldn't even try, said he was allowed to sell only what he was shipped. I didn't believe him but, knowing WM management stupidity, it wouldn't surprise me any. |

50Wt would be fine if you take long trips. When I preheat my engine, the engine compartment is warm, about 80 to 90 degress when preheating in 30 degree weather. I believe in running the oil for the operating conditions of a running engine, as long as I can preheat. The 50 wt oil will cling to the cylinder walls longer when the engine is sitting too long. |
