I'll be traveling thru Salt Lake City eastbound later this week. Is the climb out of there better on I-80 or head north on 15 then over 84? |

I-80 is LONG climb. suggest a morning start have no idea about 84 ,was never on it,would 'guess' it's about the same ,cause you got to get up to the same elevation |

We came down (WB) the I-84/ I-15 way on the way to the west coast last year. Nothing too steep that way. On the map it looks a bit longer than the I-80 way, so it should be a bit flatter. Even so, I don't think the pass on I-80 is that bad, looking at the elevations on Google Earth. Nothing like I-70 through the Rockies, Donner, Cabbage, etc. Besides, going up is easier than coming down. Take your time, watch for black smoke, gear down (stick OR auto) and enjoy the scenery! We just came out of SLC up I-15. Wasn't too bad, we had to sit once and let the bus cool down (it was 93 outside). We made it just fine. We're now sitting just south of Sun Valley, ID...nice! |

bobh, You don't say where you are coming from but I recommend I84 regardless. I did this trip from Reno via I80 in May of '05 and from Boise via I84 in May of this year. I84 is much better, more scenic and less traffic and grades. I don't know about the I15 grades North out of SLC but I doubt they are as crooked and steep as the ones on I80 out of SLC. I took that route a few years ago. I can't remember for sure but seems it was long and straight but a good grade. (Message edited by gusc on August 07, 2006) |

I-15 is not very bad out of SLC. We have traveled that way many many times. If you need a place to park for a night or two we are just outside Twin Falls about 4 min off I84. |

I've goe 80 through Salt Lake (the last time in a snow stom) many times. Some times with a tow vehicle. I'm in a 4106 and I have never had any problems at all. I have had air lines freeze, however. |

Given the choice I would take I-84.I live in the Ogden area so the Salt lake way is out of my way. The road from I-15 up I-84 to the junction of I-80 is an easy drive. There are some 55 mph curves but the signs warn you to slow down. |

The worst thing about I-80 into SLC is the prohibition on engine braking. It sucks to have a nice Jake brake and not be able to use it on a steep downgrade. I don't think the uphill grades on I-80 coming out of SLC are that bad. Brian Elfert |

Brian, If you had a 671 four speed you would have a far different perspective of I80 uphill from SLC!! |
