I am looking to buy an MC9. I have checked for obvious rust in all the places I have heard recommended online.(baggage, engine, spare tire area etc.)Mostly minimal surface rust is all I can see. I have crawled under the bus to check the frame and tapped around with a hammer and screwdriver for soft spots. The bus was originally undercoated so no rust is showing underneath. What else should I check? Are there places that can't be checked? Do I need to pay someone to do an inspection?

Iver:

Here's where you can't see (unless there's some secret I don't know);

This is only one 'small' example of what we found.

Good luck;

Iver,
seems you have the most common places covered. Also, try up around the radiators. You will find that below floor level, the frame is stainless and a lot less liable to corrode. However, water leaks from the windows and roof marker lights can be a real problem because, until the bus is yours and you can remove the internal structural panels beneath the windows and the ceiling areas behind the roof marker lights, you will not be able to see what has gone on there. On the MC-8s they have a trouble area at the base of the windshields in the center. This is apparently due to water getting into the ventilation system, I have been told. But I think it is a windshield rubber leak helping out too.
Whatever you decide, the MCI is one of the least corroding buses around and a very easy unit to fix. Try to get a bus from a good weather State where they don't use salt on the roads.
Best of luck.
Peter.
