Hello,

I have a 1980 MC-9 with an 8v71, 4 speed manual and hydraulic assisted power steering. My question is...does it just take normal hydraulic fluid in the resevoir? I don't want to put the wrong stuff in it... Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks!

By the way, we just finished a week in Yellowstone...it was awesome. Now we're on our way down to the Grand Tetons for a few days.

John,

Thanks for the links. After looking at them, I believe I'm supposed to get Gear oil at sae 90 or 140? Am I reading that correctly?

The manual call for 10W40 motor oil in the power steering.

From MCI unit #38094 (TMC unit#3273) and above uses
10W40. The earlier models use SAE#10

I have a cylinder leak... The 40w does wonders!

Some power steering units also have Dexron auto fluid in them.
If it's red color, it's Dexron, if brown looking, it's motor oil 10W40 maybe 10wt.
I've not heard of using hypoid (GL) 90 or 140 gear oil in a power steering unit.
You don't want to mix Dexron with engine oil. You could take the top of the res off and sample the oil.

Thanks JR! I was just getting ready to post about the color of the fluid in my unit. It is red...it has a small leak where one of the hoses comes into the resevoir. So, I need to add Dexron? Where can this be purchased? I don't mean to sound too stupid here...just never heard of Dexron. Any further help will be much appreciated. We are parked for the next few days at the Teton Village KOA near Jackson, WY. Gorgeous place. We are only a few spaces down from a new Prevost with two slide outs...wouldn't want to be making the payment on that thing...yikes! It's gorgeous, but my ol' bus does just fine.

Thanks again.

Tim,

You can find Dextron at WalMart, it even comes in their store brand. Any gas station or truck stop will have it but it will come in all different brands. I think they're all the same.

Look on the back of the label and see if it says anything about Dextron III, most of them do. About the only AT fluid that doesn't is for Ford/Mercury and it will say it is the same as AT Type "F". Don't use that.

Gus described the Dexron availability thing (GM automatic trans fluid)...just one more note: if your PS reservoir is similar to mine, once you see fluid in the window, quit pouring. Don't ask how I cleverly figured this out.
If you cannot easily see the res window when adding fluid, get someone to watch the window for level.

Thanks guys...

I wasn't sure what was meant by 'dextron', you learn something new everyday! Thanks for info on the sight glass too...it's tempting to ask how this was learned :-)

By the way, has anyone stayed up near Glacier National Park? We want to stay on the West side. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Put Dextron in there Tim. You'll make the oil companies happy!

You've obviously asked the question, having leaked considerable oil....

MCI calls for 10w or 10w40 dependant upon year... No mention of Dextron.

John, I'm not sure I understand the nature of your post...

Also, what the heck is YMWV, UAYOR???

I did ask the question...I have leaked FLUID. It's red, it's NOT motor oil...

Also, what's the connection between dextron and the oil companies? I seem to have missed that one too...

Uhm..

"I did ask the question...I have leaked FLUID. It's red, it's NOT motor oil... "

The oil company will enjoy continuing to sell you automatic transmission fluid, Tim.
(Tranny fluid is red)....

Try draining out the tranny fluid from the entire power steering system,
and use what the manufacturer says to use. If nothing's been ruined yet,
maybe you won't find the puddles of oil....

(oh, and sorry for the "YMWV", etc... I always see that stuff typed out
at the end of a comment, and wanted to try it out myself!)

We use 30wt or 40wt in our fleet of MC-9s with no problems! Allow the fluid you put in to fully reach the tank. I have added oil until I see it in the glass and by the time all the oil gets tot he tank it is way over full and pushes it out!
