My son left for Marines Boot Camp today and the whole family plus some want to go out for graduation in about 13 weeks or so. So we have to decide if its economical to fly or drive by the time you include lodging and air compared to diesel and time off of work. Self employed so no vacation but we will be there one way or the other no matter what it takes.

Randy -

When my son graduated from Basic at Lackland AFB, I flew into San Antonio and rented a car.

Similar situation as you - self-employed, no vacation, busy time of year. Exception is that I was travelling by myself, so flying was the most cost/time effective.

Like you, I wouldn't have missed graduation unless I was physically incapable of attending. It was well worth it - something you cannot put a price tag on. (It was heart-breaking to see the sadness in the eyes of those graduates who had NO family there to support them, btw.)

Might compare $$ flying into LAX rather than San Diego, and out of Midway rather than O'Hare. Only 90 minute drive to Pendleton from LAX.

It's about 2,000 miles from Chicago > San Diego. At a conservative 5 mpg, that's about 800 gallons of diesel round-trip. Figure around three bucks per gallon of fuel, or about $2,400 for the journey.

Also, at a conservative 500 miles/day, that's four days out and four days back, plus dawdle days in SD.

Your boy won't have a lot of leave time to spend with family immediately after graduation, so don't plan a ton of activities while in the area. Focus on spending time with him - let him decide what he'd like to do with all of his family while he's on leave.

You will definitely see a change in your son!!

Regardless of which travel method you choose - drive the coach or fly - you've already made the first really important choice, and that is to be there no matter what. You'll see the wisdom of that decision in your son's eyes at graduation.

FWIW & HTH. . .

You aught to Fly. Sun Country is running a special right now for $105 each way. Sun Country always is cheaper and the flight is great. They leave from St. Paul/Minneapolis at around 4:00pm and arrive in at 5:30pm. The flight from San Diego leaves at around 6:00 PM and arrives at Hubert Humphry at 11;3) pm. the only bummer. They fly only Monday through Friday one flight each way. Still a great deal if you can do it.

Thank you all who have served or are serving in the armed forces. It is an honor to know you, even indirectly. God Bless you all!

He really will only get a couple days max since the Corp will be looking to send him to his next stage of training immediately. He won't have it figured out yet but once he gets settled and finished with schools - maybe after 6mo's or so if not deployed he will be able to hook you up with the military MWR RV parks which aren't bad. Flying is probably the least pain at this point since essentially he will get Sat/Sun off I suspect. Or plan to see him when you can but operate independantly to enjoy the town for yourself. SD is a fun town to enjoy.
