This nine i have had in service on my scheduled run for about three years,i purchased of Greyhound for 23.000.00 it searved us well but not much good for line bus anymore,only has 34 seats,the washroom is moved forward and rear interior wall moved ahead,that back part of coach is frieght area with cargo door on exterior.Has anyone out there converted one of these combo 9 with out stripping out intire bus thought maybe taking out back seat and cutting threw back wall and making cargo area into bedroom anyone with some ideas ?

Hi Dave,
I have a 82-9 just like that.From Sask Trans.and started just like you thinking.Has a big door on rear passenger side.The wall has a frame that iam using for bedroom wall.good luck.

Leon Keep me posted on your progress,if i can be of any help let me know, i have to MC9 in service and one for personal use wich i am converting and one out of service wich i am using for spares,lots of 9 parts.Latter Dave

Hi Dave,
Does your combo have the full tag? By that I mean duals on both the drive and tag axle?

If so, does that mean it has the different bay configuration as well?

Does the overhead luggage racks add to the interior strength of the bus if i take out do i need to add something,the 24volt interior lighting in overhead can i just cut off.

Phil Single tags on all my 9s never seen or heard of with duals on the tag.I am hoping to do a good enough job on the conversion that i can lease out on weekends to reliable clients the coach is in top notch mechanical condition ewith a little time i should be able turn it into a marketable piece ,when i am not using.

Phil -

MC-7s were the only "combos" built with duals on the tags. They used Scenicruiser components, and yes, the rear baggage bay is smaller on these.

But when i say combo,i mean extra frieght area up top,the lower luggage area stays the same but you loose a little space in the rear pod passenger side for sewer discharge.Passenger area you loose up to three rows of seating.

Dave - Those of us who have worked in the bus industry over the last 25 - 30 years are aware of the combos.

Greyhound started this interesting adaptation of hiway models with some Scenicruisers in the early '70s. They left the 10 seats downstairs, closed off the upper deck, and installed a freight door on the passenger side at the last window. Hauled a ton of package express that way.

Next came a similar project with some MC-7s, altho in this case, they also modified the undercarriage, as mentioned above.

Currently, I'm not aware of any buses actually being built as combos, primarily becasue line-haul package express volume is down considerably from it's heyday in the '70s, due to competition from FedEx, UPS, etc. But Greyhound Canada still does a substantial package business, and they have solved the problem by simply using trailers hooked to the coach.

Overhead baggage and seats out,can i surface mount electrical and plumming in behind cabinets will leave exsisting washroom as is and add standup shower next to it.I plan to run fridge/stove/furnance on propane.I dont plan to redo floor or insulation in walls.I am new to this am i of track

I don't see why you can't surface mount elec. & plumbing,are you sure you can live with the bus toilet ? if that's what you are calling the washroom ?

Bob I think we can live with exsisting toilet,where three seats are standup shower add small closet for linnen towels etc,close that area with wall and entrance door.The entire bus will be wired so that i can run off diesel kubuto generator when parked,will leave coach wirring completly intacted as well as Ac unit worked well thus far,add roof unit for when coach is parked.Use back cargo area for water tank and pump etc,aswell as hunting and fishing gear,put generator under neath and put exhaust threw exsisting engine exhaust.Basically a cabin on wheels,run coolant lines from generator threw engine cooling lines that way when coach engine is running it will keep generator warm and when generator is running it will keep engine warm.

Hello David.

We used the stock coach washroom up until last fall.

It works, but only until whatever chemical you use is overpowered, and then the open sewer will stink you out.

So long as your style of operation involves regular dumping, and no wierd dietary inputs, you can last a number of days.

My daughter and I successfully survived 4 days at Arcadia two years ago, only with the help of the onsite "Johnny on the spot" for more serious undertakings, and the weather wasn't too hot....

With the whole family of 5, it was about two days or so before the signs of a run away started to show.

Believe me, and every professional coach operator before and after: once that thing starts to smell, there is NOTHING you can do to make it stop, except dump AND RINSE. No amount of chemicals, oils, voodoo or religious observances will stop the smell, once it starts.

For a Canadian supplier, I got a couple of plastic rectangular tanks out in Milton ON, 49 USgallons each, approx 9 inches wide, and 21 tall, and 60 deep. I'm using them standing up on the skinny side. Leaves lots of room for surrounding them top and bottom with the foam insulation of your choice and still fit under the utility bump in the MCI. They'll weld in fittings anywhere you want.

They have many different sizes available, and its all on their website, prices too!

Bus Warrior,here what your saying toilet needs constant atention,but kind of use to that situation fill and dump on a regular basis.Will install extra sewer tank same luggage pod for shower and sinks.A fellow i know in Yellowknife builds plastic water and sewer tanks for houses said he could manufacture what i need .
