Does anyone know what size of restrictor would be used in the oil line feeding the large oil cooled altenator on a 6V92TA. It is gear driven and the oil pressure is low due to the oil dumping into it with out a restrictor fitting. Oil pressure was fine till I changed to a rebuilt altenator which gets its oil sent to both the rear diode section and a small line to the front bearing. My other altenator had oil only to the diode section. With the oil pressure sender connected to this line it shows low oil pressure now. Any help would be appreciated. Bill |

Hey Bill, I think that I have a bulletin that calls for a 0.080 orfice, But I am not 100%. I will look through the books and see. Maybe someone will know right off the top of their head. Dale |

DD Tech help is here: www.detroitdiesel.com Bulletins, etc, here: http://www.detroitdiesel.com/public/sp/spnav.asp It'll take time to dig through it..... The alternators weren't made by DD, were they? If not.... hmmm... dunno... Say.... why not give Luke a call? |

It is not unusual to have the oil sending unit and oil feed lines coming from the same port in the block. You will have a 5psi or so drop in oil pressure reading when the port is shared, but this should not create problems. You could always move the pressure sender line to another oil port on the block-- they are all on the same horizontal plane on the side of the block. |

Thanks guys. The oil pressure reading is only 20lbs at the gauge in the altenator line and 58lbs at the DDEC oil pressure sender. My oil pressure gauge is acurate so that isn't the problem. I was told by a DD mechanic that there should be a restrictor fitting as far as he knows but didn't know the size of it. He says what is happening is the oil is being dumped into the altenator so the gauge is reading a low pressure on this line. Thanks for the DD links. Bill |

Bill, here's the part numbers for it: Delco #: 1987256 MCI #: 7G-3-37 The restriction on this fitting is only for the line that feeds oil to the front bearing. Hope this helps. |

While we're talking about oil, pressures, restricted fittings, etc....this might me a good time to challenge the experts. I'm installing a 24V Preluber on my 8V71 and my best guess is that if I feed from a point about 1 1/2" above the floor of the oil pan, through a by-pass type oil filter and a check valve..should I feed the pressurized oil to the oil cooler or to the block where the oil pressure sender resides? I realize that I'll get virtually an instant reading of oil pressure that way but if I time the pumps' "on" time would I get enough flow to lift the crank in about 30 seconds? And would I be back flushing the engine oil pump? NCbob |

Sammy Thanks. I will order one from MCI. Bob If you read the DD links from John MC9 there is a section on prelube connections. It is taken from the pan and fed into the fitting on the filter. Bill |
