Being a small bus collector and having buses over the age of 25, it wasn't hard to insure them. Now I may have a new addition coming to my collection in a few weeks under the age of 25.

In the State of NJ I have seen numerous buses with complete interiors with regular state issued plates on them, but the problem is how does one get insurance for them? I know you can register a bus in the state of NJ as a non-commercial vehicle and recieve standard state issued plates. Churches especially I have seen them with the regular plates.

Does anyone have a clue how to get insurance for a bus for personal/non commerical use? If anyone has any info or good leads please post them here or at my email.

Jason,

You have to call it a motorhome and not transport any people. Also,do not have any bus seats in it. as if you were involved in a accident, you will be concidered a bus. Some lawyers could have a field day with that...
Stick with a RV insurance Co. They are less critical about questioning the subject.
Good Luck

In New Jersey, before you can insure it as a motorhome, it must be titled as a motorhome. When I purchased my coach, it was already titled as a motorhome, so I can't tell you how to go through that process. However, since it's New Jersey, I'm sure it's a huge pain in the butt!!! Everything else is! Anyhow, I have my coach insured through Geico. Have fun...

Hi Tim,

I had a nightmare on my hands when I started the title process, My local DMV had me going to Trenton 2 different times and wanting to make me file a reconstruction title.......
Well, I got so angry that I stopped at another DMV that was not in my county and I just happened to walk in there 10 min's before closing. That was the smartest move because I was handed the new title as a moterhome in 8 min's flat with no questions asked. I guss you just have to catch them when they are closing. Hummm....

I got RV insurance through GMAC and it`s about 3 1/2 centurys every 6 months.

You gotta call it a Bus conversion or they wont do it.
I have a 1975 Flx that I plan to keep "Monday Rollout" so It will retain all its transit hardware.

Was glad to find insurance where I really didn`t have to pull the seats.

Good luck

Check on a company called National Interstate. They are in Ohio. They have my insurance on my 4905. Ask Luke about how easy they are to deal with. Mike4905

Do not know exactly how it works in NJ, but out here in OR I got binded thru Progressive Insurance. Somewhat $spendy$ at $550 a year for PL and PD with a $6000 bus value, plus uninsured motorest. $200 deductable.

All I did to make my '74 ex-schoolie Crown into a non-commercial private RV was to toss in a temp. bed, range and icebox after removing most of the school bus seats.

The lady at the DMV was very friendly and helpful. Got RV NON_COMMERICAL tags with no problem at all. Just hang onto your hat when they quote you the $$$ for the plates.

Try talking to your INDEPENDANT auto/RV insturance agent and see what can be done to make your coach into a private RV in the state of NJ. The local DMV lady here in OR said the regulations were national in nature. Good luck.

Nick,

I think you hit Motor Vehicle at the perfect time! I'm not sure I've been in there for less than 8 minutes...Wow! That place is a nightmare!
