In the racing and aircraft world, usually the visable threads must show at least 3 and more desirable is 5 threads. I once had some alloy wheels on my old 4905. I did not change the studs to the longer wheel studs. I had just a few threads showing. Every place I went someone would make a comment on how many threads were showing. Later I covered the nuts with the chrome nut covers. Frank

In the high pressure gas industry we used a three treads showing.The reason was that the frist three threads where tapered to allow easy thread start and therefor had no nut strenth.that said I have seen alcoa rims put on without installing longer stud running for 15 years.It boils down to saftey and peace of mind.

For the past seven years I've been using my A@P to repair Blackhawk helicopters Our SOP was no less than 2 threds showing. I have long since forgotten what I was tought in school but in my opinion any thread showing is doing nothing the requirement to have a thread showing is to insure all of the threads of the nut are in contact. I would sleep very soundly with only 1 thread showing

Doug,

Then you don't understand stress patterns as it relates to strenght of materials. It's best (not absolutely necessary) to have 1/2 the root diameter extending past the nut.

Hello folks.

If an enforcement type ever looks at your wheels, you best have something showing, even a whisper.

The trouble that starts after some auto rear ends you or otherwise nothing to do with you gets it started...

Or, get the nut covers.... too many busy bodies out there with cell phones....

You may be right with your install, but what is it going to cost in time and inconvenience to straighten it out when some badge tries to look good?

I didn't use the generic term for the threaded device on which I commented.

I meant the root diamater of the threads of the wheel retention device.
