Hello
I would like to know more about this 'thingy' (the emergency shut off solonoid)

The seller of the bus emailed me the following:

"The emergency shut off solenoid is bad, which means that the air vent in the
turbo was shut and the normal amount of air wasn't getting to the engine
(blows black smoke), but I ordered a new one today and I opened the valve
and everything is back to normal and running fine. It can run without the
solenoid without any problems, its just that it won't shut the valve if you
hit the switch from inside if its not working. It just took me awhile to
figure it out."

Is there some reason that the valve would be shut other than the solnoid going bad? I haven't asked the seller directly. Just concerned that theere may be some other reason that it went closed, allowing the bus to run, albiet with a lot of black smoke as he stated.

Any opinions? or concerns?

thanks very much

Mark

The solenoid retracts a pin with a rounded end which allows the air flap at the blower inlet to close, choking off the air to the engine. Won't hurt that the solenoid is temporarily inoperative unless the engine needs to be shut down in an emergency , such as a run away engine or the normal shut down system quits. You should get it repaired asap. Could be a bad solenoid, no voltage to the solenoid, frozen flap, dirty switch or dirty or bad relay. Sometimes the switches act up because they rarely get used.

the shut off that was in my truck would close if you hit a big bump in the road. the flapper may not cover the blower opening enough to stop the engine. i had that problem on the same truck
good luck

the ones that I,ve seen operate don't kill the engine, but only let it operate at more than low speed or higher that idle with a lot of black smoke, otherwise might damage blower seals ( speculation about the blower seals)

Hello Mark.

Above postings are good.

The solenoid's job is to pull the catch on the hold open mechanism for the air flap.

Failure of the solenoid would not affect regular engine running.

The air flap may or may not completely stall the engine. Depends how tightly it happens to close, whether it is completely flat, etc.

I would only use the emergency shut down to catch a run away engine, or to test that it will pull the catch. Tripping the flap does put some suction on the blower seals, which may or may not cause problems.

Everyone should know where to put their finger to pull the fuel shut-off linkage, if the regular engine shut down mechanism fails. Remember, you have to have air pressure to get the engine to shut down.

In order to help those who may not know, does anyone have pics? Or do I go for another documentary colaboration with Brian B?

happy coaching!

Although he didn't say so here he posted on the other board and this is a 4104 w/6-71, nothing like the 8V-71.

thanks for all the replies

Christopher, the seller has told me that it was upgraded to have the turbo, but as others have mentioned, he may be mistaken the blower for a turbo. (?)

thanks again

Mark
