Anyone know the oil capacity for a 471 Detroit? It's in a 1958 Flxible bus. Every time I change oil I refill by the dipstick marker, 4gals, and I seem to leak more oil until the level drops some. Wayne |

Wayne, I don't even know what a 471 looks like, but the rule of thumb is the full oil level is 1" below the parting line between the oil pan and the block. Hold the oil dipstick beside the tube and compare the "full" mark with the above described proceedure- HTH, Chuck |

Mine, in a '57 Courier 96, takes about 5 gallons. Maybe my oil pan is bigger than yours... Do what Chuck suggests to verify the dip stick. JC |
