I just purchased a 1955 PD4501 w/6V92 on a recent trip the dash lights started to pulse ( bright/dim ) and finally went out but came back on a few seconds later, this happened twice. Once I got back home I took out the batteries to clean the terminals and found one battery had exploded and another the polarity was reversed. Replaced the batteries, the lights still pulse but only with the engine on. The dash/headlights are run off the engine batteries which there is an off/on switch for. Could it be the alternator; which in this coach is not easy to get to ? and how could I check it ?

The generator is a 1978 vintage Onan 12.5kw diesel air cooled with currently 4900 hrs and was rebuilt at 2800 hrs. The generator runs for a few seconds and stops, with white smoke comming out, however after trying to start it a few times the smoke disappears, could it condensation ? Also changed oil/air/fuel filters, it is getting fuel but still only runs a few seconds. I havn't tried it yet, but would be safe to ground out the oil pressure switch to see if that is causing the shutdown ?

Thanks in advance...

White Smoke is unatomized diesel fuel.

For example, if I try to start my 8v71,
turn over a few, and doesnt start.

I'll get what appears as white smoke out the exhaust.

Thanks for the info, based on what you told me, found a few possible causes for this:

Commonly caused by poor seating of the injector o-rings with the injector sleeve. It can be also caused by an improper fit between the injector sleeve and the block. Occasionally an injector will blow the tip off the cup due to the holes being restricted and allow unatomized fuel through the crankcase.

--- or ---

Could also be caused by bad/gummed up glow plugs. By not having high enough temp to burn diesel particles.

------

Far as the alternator got a few ideas for the MCI charging problem post.

Put all new glow plugs in the generator got rid of the white smoke, but now only runs for a few seconds and dies, it is getting fuel and black smoke comes out now while trying to start. Guess the next step is a compression check before I send the injectors out.

Pulsing lights; replaced the ends on the voltage ( they were very corroded ) regulator side no effect, guess I will have to go 'in' and find the alt.

After I washed my generator compartment my generator would not stay on. I thought the problem was fuel or air in fuel line. Bled the fuel injectors etc. Started, quit in a few seconds. The throttle was pulling back after it started. Seems it was one of the saftey shut off devices triggering shut down. I finally figured I had good oil pressure, plenty of oil and coolant, good temperature and no broken belts so I held the throttle by hand just enough to keep it from shutting down. After a couple of minutes it ran fine and has given no more trouble. Obviously I got something wet. Maybe you have a failed sensor. BTW A diesel will run on poor compression once it is running. Just hard to get it started. My tractor is so worn I have to use ether on a summer day now. Once running it is fine, and an excellent mosquito fogger.

This has been a learning experience. Noticed as soon as I let off the start switch the fuel solenoid would become de-energized and shut off the fuel. Low oil and centrifugal switch tested ok. Took control panel and cleaned up an old style relay Gen still shuts off after letting go of the start switch, it will run if I hold the fuel solenoid up. Traced the wires back and found the start/stop ( SPDT momemtary ). The switch was bad, a short in the switch caused the fuel solenoid to de-engergize after releasing from the start position. The gen now runs with no smoke.

Now have a new problem. Gen running great put no power inside coach :( it is putting out juice, though. The bus has an auto switch, just now gotta trace the wires back and find how the relays work.
