Drats. Had to come home a day early. Generator was working fine, had stopped to ask permission to spend night at a WalMart. When we got back in the bus, i could tell right away there was no heat. Generator motor was still running, but zero output. Circuit breakers all looked good, but reset anyway, and it did no good. I do not have a manual for my genset, so any suggestions on what to check would be appreciated. It is an older Onan 5.0, gas engine air-cooled model. TIA |

Lots of older Onan's have a "brige rectifier" that goes bad - especially when you turn off the generator with the rooftop A/C still running. Replace it with a generic bridge rectifier (BR) with a higher "PIV - Peak Inverse Voltage Rating" - original onan - approx 300 PIV An after market BR w/1,000 volt (PIV) rating is available from many Electronics stores at less than $10. The PIV is greater than 3 times the OEM BR & should never fail (well almost never). NTE # 5328 is the after market BR that I use. (Duane Simmons) or higher capacity rectifier (KBPC3510) (35 amps 1000 PIV Pete RTS/Daytona |

Thanks Pete. Where do i find the br on the genset? What do i look for, and is there anyway to test it with a multi-meter to see if it is bad? I appreciate your help. |

John You can test them with a multi-meter they have 4 terminals (+) (-) (ac) (ac) see--> http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/gallery/showpic.php?uuid=tipsicobob&aid=444&pid=17103 use the meter to check resistance on each of the 4 sides - Side corner to side corner - not diagonilly(sp??) - each of the 4 sides should have a high resistance one way and a low resistance when you flip the meter leads If any side does NOT have a high/low reading - it's bad here's some pictures / discussion on BR replacements in a GMC Classic M/H http://users.california.com/~eagle/generator.html see---> Onan Bridge Rectifier Replacement-- http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/gallery/showalbum.php?uuid=mrerf&aid=346 |

John, I don't wish to step on Pete's toes, but having been an Onan dealer for over 20 years let's get some information so we can discusss this problem intelligently. There should be a plate on the generator that should give the Model and Spec #'s. I suspect that it's a 5.0CCK but that's only a guess. Get that information for me and I can lead you to the source of the problem...probably a resistor in the generator end. So, if you'll do that...I can help you. My e-mail is in my profile. Bob |

Hi Bob, and thank you for your offer to help. You are correct, it is a model CCK-IR, 6000P. Don't know if the serial number contains any useful info, but it is 0472435659. I tried your profile but could not find an email address. Thanks again. |

Bob, don't worry about my generator. I woke up to 4" of snow this morning, so i doubt it i will be out there laying in the snow working on it anytime soon. Take care of your wife, and hope all things go well! When things are settled down and you feel up to it, give me a shout. Thanks again. |
