This topic comes up all the time. How does one charge the house batteries ( 12 volt systems ) when the bus has a 24 volt alternator.

The answer could be complicated like adding a separate 12 volt alternator.. or as simple as adding a solar charge controller to provide a 60 amp 12 volt 3-stage charge to the house batteries while you are driving.

Here is one idea.. Looks very good too !

I would not depend on solar for anything, I like my extra alternator,29.00 at any parts house, delco remey, took a while to make the bracket ...it's hooked up to the pulley that is empty on the front of a 8v71

__. My engine has a crossover shaft that drives the radiator fan. It has a U-joint just behind the stock radiator. All it too was a standard V-belt pulley with holes drilled to match the flance bolts. Cost me ~$60 in parts (not including battery) and less than an afternoon. The bracket was the biggest job. But, not really a big one.

Hi:
If you're using 12V batteries in series to provide your 24V then an equalizer makes sense, I have two, one for chassis, one for house.

Apperently I must have not explained properly.

Solar has nothing to do with the idea here. The Xantrex unit will take the 24 volts from your "Source" (aka the engine alternator system) and create and maintain a 12 volt house battery system. If you look at the specs it says "any" source for the input d.c. voltage ( up to 55 volts ) and output at the required voltage. Includes automatic load control and charging functions along with the option of adding an LCD display to show what's going on.

This unit technically could be used as an equalizer but does a lot more neat stuff.

Sorry that I wasn't "CLEAR" in my haste to provide something that might be helpful....

Interesting repurposing of technology. I'll have to add it to my 12V on 24V page - let me know how it works out if you try it:
