I have removed the thermostat housing (6-71) to check the thermostat. Engine will not go over 150 or so, and it takes half an hour on the freeway to reach that. Any tips for getting the thermostat out of there so i can test it out? TIA

Hi David, the stat stayed in the housing on the block. The end cover came right off, but the stat is stuck in there pretty darn good.

Doug, yes, the bypass stat is on the curb side of the bus. I also tried to remove the cover here, thinking i could then try to persuade the main stat on the driver side to pop out. But after removing the nuts, i cannot yet get the stat housing/cover to come off. I guess tomorrow out comes the torch and try some heat.

Any other ideas out there?

John,

I had the same problem when I first got my 4104. I discovered that my radiator shutter valve was closed because it was leaking air. I fixed the leak, turned it on and now it runs 180-190* in all weather.

Do yourself a favor and check this out first.

Bob, no my bus does not have the shutters on it. It is just open in from of the radiator. I have no idea when or why they would have been taken off.

Gus, are you talking about your shutters staying open all the time, and that keeping the engine cold?

Because the shutters are missing, it will be difficult for the engine to maintain correct heat, especially in cooler weather. You will need to obtain and reinstall a set of shutters or fab up a declutching fan setup, which would be a bigger PITA than reinstalling the shutters. See Luke or Dean's coach to get the parts you need.My 04 will act the same way if the shutters are open all the time.

John,

Yes, mine were open all the time until I discovered the closed air valve.

Since you have no shutters I would recommend, along with the others, that you get some. As many 4104s as there are around you should be able to find some. Those things are great. Otherwise you need to cover the radiator.

John and Gus, thanks for the info on the shutters. It would seem then that all that is wrong with my bus is the missing shutters.

I never did get the main engine stat to come out, and i never did get the bypass stat cover to come loose. So today i put it all back together. And i never broke anything!

For now, it will have to be a piece of cardboard hanging in front of the radiator. Hope to track down a shutter system i can afford at some point in the future. Thanks again for the help guys.

don't know if you could find it...but I had a 1958 volvo that had a screen much like a window shade that was adjustable from inside, that went in front of radiator
Glad you are leaveing the thermostats alone, they were not the problem

John,

You were lucky, I would have broken something for sure!

Bob has a good idea if you can think of some way to move it from the front.

In cold weather you should be able to get away with covering most of the radiator full time, diesels really run cold in cold weather. I used to cover 90% of an Int 18 wheeler and it still ran cold but covering it completely was not allowed.

I'd start out with covering 20%....overheating a 2 cycle doesn't work

Thanks again guys. I guess for the time being i will use a piece of rubberized mat hanging in front of the radiator. I will be able to roll it up or down to adjust how much air is allowed. After all, i bought the bus to escape to warmer cilmates eventually. For the next year or so, i doubt i will put that many miles on it during the winter. I do appreciate your help!
