I need to repair/replace my block heater in my 4905 w/8v71. I have gone through my manuals and I cannot find a part number (I have the part number book as well). I like having numbers so I can make calls before taking things apart. The cord is bad. Has anyone ever taken one apart/are they disassembleable? When removing one, do I need to drain the coolant first or do they sit above the coolent level with the element dipping into the coolant? Thanks! |

Hi Glen: You will not find the block heater in a GM parts manual, as it was an option and most options did not make it to the book. Yes, you will have to drain the water level to a point below the block heater in order to remove without losing your coolant. If you need help, you can call me toll free tomorrow at: 1-888-262-2434. I Hope this HELPS!!! LUKE at US COACH |

Thanks Luke! Can you give me a procedure to drain and know when you have reached a safe point - aside from draining the whole thing? Do you know if the heater can be dissassembled? Glenn |

Glen, the heater can not be dis-assembled, it is a sealed unit. have a new oneavailable (at any NAPA dealers)and switch them quickly without loosing much coolant.>>>DAN |

Hi Glen, I have seen units that the cord retained by a knurled aluminum nut. You might look at yours and see if it is constructed this way. The nut unscrews and the cord can be removed and replaced. Try NAPA or truck repair for the replacement. No coolant loss this way. This assumes of course that the element still works and is intact. HTH dickegler |

Thanks Guys! I just picked up a new complete unit from a local truck parts house for 40.00. Dick - upon looking at the plug wires today, the old 90 degree rubber plug insert was just rotted to pieces. I thought about just looking for a replacement, but the heater looks as old as the bus -1970! Might as well do it once and do it right. I'm going to use your advice Dan, and do the old quick switcheroo. |

Well Luke, The next time you tell me to call you I'd better! The local truck shop sold me the block heater for a 6v92 which does not have the water jacket plate and does not have a long enough threaded section to install in the water jacket plate. I just ordered it through you via Mike. Thank gosh someone out there still knows what an 8v71 is! Glenn |
