For several years I have pondered the value (or none) of the rear "flaps" on a 40 foot coach. In my particular case,Crown Supercoach, it is about 10+- feet or so from the rear bumper to the back of the wheel well on the tandems where the flap is attached. Mine need to be replaced due to condition. The length of the space does not appear to be any advantage to throwing stones if the flaps were not in place.

There are about 30 inches or so of Diesel tank, some open space and then the "trunk" bed of about 5 feet, plus a foot or so for the bumpers.

Any ideas out there before I look for a new conveyer belt( the ones in place now are only the width of the duals) In the front, however,(behind the front wheels) the flap goes the entire width of the coach...this , I am led to understand is to control the amount of pressure, etc. The pancake engine is amidships, just behind the front wheels.

Comments would be appreciated.... :-)

Thanx,

RCB

I like what UPS does on their trucks with the brush around the wheels to minimize road wash.

I'd put flaps on to keep road debris off my undercarriage. That front full width has a big effect on air movement under the bus, the factory knew this.

Good Luck,

RCB -

On your Crown, the full-width front flap is there to create a low pressure area immediately behind it. This low pressure helps draw air thru the radiator, so removing the flap would have an adverse effect on your cooling system. GMC used the same principal on it's coaches, except at the rear axle. (Was interesting to see many of the GMs in Arcadia this year that either had no flap at all, or had hung one off the rear bumper - which now traps hot air under the engine, a no no!)

The rear flaps are basically there to reduce the risk of road debris being flung off the tires from doing damage to the undercarriage and/or the vehicle following you.

So, time to start looking for some used conveyor belt!!

FWIW & HTH. . .

RJ>that's what I was looking for and had concluded, but as you know, there is strength in numbers....:-) Both need replacing.

Kyle, thanx for your comments.

I have noted, that the bottom only of the rear flaps are the problem. Some one mounted a metal weight bar across the width and that is pretty well torn up. Front is not as bad, but still is an eyesore...to me at least.

Have any idea how far off the deck the optimum cut would be? My manuals don't address that subject.

Ain't this a great "hobby"....$$$$$!
