Finally the cheapo replacement speedometer crapped out.

GM 4106

No BOOK for attempting to fix it ,

SO what luck have folks had with aftermarket speedos?

Mine has the drive for the Tachygraph , still installed,

BUT I would rather get a nice version of an electric unit driven by the front wheel.

AN odometer would be nicer than checking the hub meter for MPG or oil change info,
nice to have not NEED to have.

AS I have no tach, the spedo IS an important instrument to me.

What have you installed , at what cost?

Fred,

"outfit in Phoenix" is:

Precision Speed Instruments
POBox 27400
Phoenix, AZ 85061

(602)973-1055

"Don" is good, but anyone else in service knows buses and what a 4106 is. Good outfit.

I have the electric one, but one of the pickups broke and have not fixed it.

In the meantime I have a Color Street Pilot which gives me absolute speed, plus altimeter, plus time in route etc. Plus where I am, even thought I know.

Thanks for the sage advice , but after seeing a picture of RL 's 4106 ,I have drcided to install the origonal "tachygraph" style speedo.

Sits on the dash and looks kind of "retro".

My navigatrix will enjoy not having to look at the hub meter to figure fuel use and miles to oil change too.

It has speedometer , odometer and a clock.

The clock is so large I think a back up screen could fit in its place,, but Ill stick with outside mirrors and the clock.
A $2000 tracking sat TV would be nice too, instead of the clock,,,

Just hope to be able to get it all together in a few days , as were heading for Destin FL for a few days , at end of Jan.

Without a tach the speedo is a NEED to have , for downshifting.

Fast Fred,

What type of speedo did you eventually get? I must have missed a posting. The reason why I ask is that I own a '66 5303 suburban fishbowl with basically the same configuration as yours. The speedo has not worked since I bought the bus last August. I am not sure if it is the speedo, the sending unit, or the cabling between, but I sure would l o v e to replace it since I have already learned the hard way of running out of fuel. (It is really hard to read the odometer on the back axle when you are driving down the highway at o-dark-thirty on a rainy Friday night.
Any help that you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

HI Jeff, So far I'm trying to get an old tachygraph to work. I think the top speed of 70 is OK for my coach , and the drive and cable are still intact.
But the inner is frozen and does not turn , yet < I hope.

Have the coach up on lifting blocks and will be troubble shooting the cable today,, after some serious dock building.

One reason for using the origonal style tachygraph is to free the dead speedometer hole to accept a real tach.
Although I feel a tach is only fun to have , not a need to have , a brand new Stuart Warner came my way for only $25 at a boat flea market , so why not?
