Would you think there are any issues with cutting the backbone in almost freezing weather? Yes, I'm (for once) planning ahead for summer and building the rooftop (carbunkle) framework.

I have all my 1.5" 14ga sq. tubing, cut, primed, ready to go. Two 5' pieces on each side of the existing backbone to be welded into place *before* cutting the spine.

I can tell that the entire bus structure has 'shrunk' ever so slightly in this weather compared to summer, and am wondering if there are any issues I should take into account before I have an "oh sh**t" moment when things warm up ???

OR....you could offset the hole & not touch the backbone

Chuck,

The amount of contraction and expansion over the size of that a/c opening is very, very small.

Just get the steel at the same outside/inside temp before cutting and you should be fine.

Thanks for the confirmation, Cliff. Every now and then I come across something that I had no idea about and didn't want this part of the project to be one of those!

And thank you too, Mr. "Greenwood!" It is a valid suggestion but I'm just too much of an inline guy for that. I've done plenty of wierd stuff in other areas though!

Yeah, that's about right the way I'm going. . .

And it'll still look like a box of saltine crackers! :-)
