Joyce...if you have the numbers off the brake OR the unit itself, take it to a place they sell parts for trucks (Message edited by bob greenwood on January 27, 2007) |

Are you sure you want a maxi brake or a jake brake? |

Thanks for the info Bob. It is a maxi pot that we need. (not a jake brake). We have tried several places but the one that we need is different from the normal ones. It has three lines coming off of it a apposed to the normal one that has only two. I guess we will have to do as you said and just take it with. Anyways thanks for your advice guys. Joyce |

a maxi with 3 lines is very unusual. must be bus specific to mci. you wont find one at any truck parts. call mci |

Joyce, A brake chamber with three lines sounds like a DD3. Your profile lists MCI, and 8V92. What model MCI is your 8V92 in? If we know that, we can tell you whether it came stock with Maxi's or DD3's! Rebuild kits are easily available for DD3's at reasonable prices. George |

Joyce, I left out an easy identification method. When you apply the parking brake, do you hear a LOUD exhaust of air from under the rear, with flying dust if parked on dry dirt? If so, its Maxi's. If essentially quiet on application, its DD3's. George |

DD#'s or Maxi's are available from Luke in New Jersey;he could ship it to you and could help you with identification over phone. Last time I checked, a rebuilt DD3 was $450 each EXCHANGE. Bendix doesn't make new ones anymore. Actually different company name anymore.OTOH maxi's are relatively cheap and no, you are going to have to stay with which ever type you have, as the air brake system has significantly different plumbing for the two types of brake unit.Luke is at- U.S. Coach Repair 1-856-767-4848 in New Berlin, New Jersey. As you are a new member, you may have never heard of him, unless you have been a read only non-member for some time. Anyway, you can go back in the archives to verify that he is thought of very highly. |

Joyce, Please accept my apology that I didn't clean up this thread earlier. In spite of the inappropriate nature of a certain reply, you responded well. Welcome, and thank you for your participation on the board. Ian www.busnut.com |

Joyce - With three air lines coming out of the brake can, you have a DD3 brake chamber, not a maxi-brake. Highly recommend that if you're replacing one, you replace them both. Expensive, yes, but then again, what price safety??? In addition to Luke (1-888-262-2434), you might also try: Mohawk: 1-800-323-7652 Muncie: 1-800-428-8610 MCI: 1-800-323-1238 With all suppliers, if you have a part number, it helps speed the process. IIRC, the DD3s come in different sizes, you might want to measure yours [(L x W)+ diameter + length of push rod] in lieu of a part number. Good Luck, and HTH. . .

Bob - They may be easy and cheap to rebuild, but if the cans are rust buckets, replacement's a better option. Again the mantra: "What price safety?"
