I just wanted to thank Tim Hoskinson, a BNO Board regular, for helping me finish the last nagging problem on my Silversides/Series50 project. And it works great!! When I installed the engine, I had to have a new exhaust manifold that would locate the turbocharger at the rear of the engine rather than the side due to space restrictions. I mistakenly insisted on making that manifold larger than the original because I thought the extra length and turns would create additional restrictions to the flow. What I came to realize during discussions with Tim was that the split chamber turbocharger required high velocity air right off idle to perform. I had lost that velocity with the first prototype due to the increased volume of that manifold. We decided on a design for a "header" that he could build in his shop. I bought the seamless high pressure gas pipe and butt-weld fittings and he went to work using the original OEM manifold and the first prototype as a jig/model. The result not only looked beautiful but improved the already good performance at least 25%. Tim has several Silversides and has his own one-of-a-kind conversion in the works. It should be a Beauty! Thanks again Tim! Rdub |

Rdub, how close are you to being finished and how long have you been working on her? I remember seeing her in BC magazine awhile ago. What kind of trans are you using and did you change the rear differential? Congrats on the manifold update. Thanks dave |

Hi David, Wow, it looks like you've got a beauty yourself. I guess it's a Bulletin Board like this one that gives us the best opportunity to meet other "classic" owner/builders. I bought the bus in August of 2000. I've been working on her since although I would say by the end of '04 I was past 90% inside and out. Now, with this last effort, I can say that I'm at the point where any more "work" would only be revising or improving what I've already done. The major areas were: Engine/trans swap ( DDEC III Series 50/ Allison VR731R ), RTS rear axle w/4.10 diff. (74 mph @ 2050 rpm) and air bags, RTS front axle w/ Sheppard power steering and "wedge" brakes (wonderful!!) and...everything else - inside and out! I've been thinking of submitting a "Centerfold" article to BC as a follow-up to the series I wrote. I (and I'm sure everyone else) would love to hear about your bus and its restoration. Thanks for your interest in mine. Rdub Note: Anyone know of a venue (Bus Bash?) specifically for pre-50s...okay... pre-60s too. |

How aqbout in Hershey June 2nd? Maybee we will be rolling again by then! We bought ours in 96 and were mainly using her in stock running gear. We would love to do your repower! a series 50 is hot stuff for sure. Right now she is finishing a major engine/trans/diff/suspension/brakes/elect/wiring/and lots more down at Deans Coach. Robert Moore is doing his thing. He and Garry's nephew Rob are keeping the place going after Garry passed on last summer. We are starting over on the interior when she comes home. Our coach was in BC mag in Jan 2001 on the cover in May 01, and various articles in may 02 june 03 and july 04. You have to do an article. Make it a long one with lots of pictures! thanks for the come back. Dave and Dori |

Hey Rdub thank you that was a very nice post I appreciate the kind words. Its always nice to here when you have done something that worked out well. So often a person only hears about what mistakes they have made. I am always ready to help a fellow Silverside owner or really any classic bus owner. Looking forward to meeting up with you this summer hope to see you come up for the antique power show in Outville July6,7&8th (Message edited by tdh37514151 on January 31, 2007) |
