I was going home yesterday and went past the weight station at the SD and MN boarder. I saw a new sign stating that all veichels over 8,000 GVW must stop. The next sign stated that all Buses, RVs and rental-trucks must stop. This must have just been posted at the beginning of the month. I have tried to find out more information on the new signs but I have not been able to find any information on the SD DOT or Highway Patrol web sites. I may stop on the station to find out more information. Has anyone else seen anything about this for other states? |

Ron, I was in twenty states last summer, including SD, and saw nothing like that. Guess I'll go around SD, just like IL and spend my money elsewhere. Cheers...JJ |

That's interesting. I stopped in a SD weigh station in November, when I was heading east on my way home with the coach I had bought in Seattle. I paid $35.00 at the weigh station and they told me that once the coach was converted, I wouldn't have to stop. A "Private Coach" or some other similar sign, if you still have the destination sign, might not be a bad idea. If I'm driving in SD once my conversion is finished, I'll probably stop at the first weight station just be sure I haven't misunderstood (hopefully they won't charge me the $35.00) |

This is something new as of Feb 1st. I travel between MN and SD everyday for work and past this weight station everyday and this is a new sign. The old sign stated that RVs were excempt from the station. I know that the SD state government is going after over weight vehicles. They found that weather and over weight vehicles do most of the damage to the roads. I think that did a study and found that they couldn't change the weather, so they are going after the over weight vehicles. Yesterday I saw a newer Ford Class C pulled in and the driver was in talking with the people at the station. I plan on stopping tonight to find out more information. I will post my finding. |

This is something brand new as of Feb 1st. I stopped at the station tonight and talked with one of the people. They were not to up front with information. They said that it was do to terrorism. They want to see your license, registration, and proof of insurance. I ask if I have to go across the scale and they said "Yes." I asked if they are doing DOT type inspection. Their answer was "Depends." That is when they started to really clamed up. I think they were getting up set with my questions. I took that sign that it was time for me to leave. I have a call out to a friend in the Highway Patrol to find out some more information. |

Sounds like a Border Crossing at Check Point Charlie in Berlin, in the old days. You know: "Papers Herren, passport, insurance card, registration, yellow card..."Jawohl Mein Herr" Seig Heil!! Terrorism my ASS, it's the $35.00, pure and simple, along with a dose of Big Brother is Watching! Someone must have gone to the Governor's Conference in Illinois last fall. They pull that B.S. there too. So, let's spend our money and time somewhere else. Is there an activist group to fight this nonsense? Due to a anti-motorhome government in Illinois, several advocacy groups now recommend fueling up and driving straight thru that state without spending time or money there. You, and I know that you can't stuff a bus with enough to be over gross weight. The Black Hills, and Buffalo Gap were on my itinerary for next summer, but not now. Thanks for being sharp-eyed on this thing Ron, it's appreciated. Cheers...JJ |

A friend of mine moved from NJ 12 years ago. Went to renew DL here in MT, found that NJ now "connected at the hip" and as there is a LAW that says you must notify the NJ DL bureau if you leave the state mein herr, and as he did not, there was a 12 year old fine in NJ he had to pay B4 he was allowed to renew his DL!!! Check out the post below, follow APC's advice and get active or reactive as it is TOO LATE to be proactive. *** States Creating a National ID System The push for a national identification system is in full swing by state driver’s license bureaucrats. The American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA) has launched a campaign to convince the federal government to allow them to add customers’ most sensitive information to state-issued driver’s licenses. This information could include everything from fingerprints to biometric data. In addition, AAMVA is lobbying for federal money to create a national database that would be linked to every state, and would therefore house each individual’s information in a centralized locale. Of course, by having all 50 states work together to “standardize” driver’s licenses, the national ID nazis hope to skirt much of the controversy that would surround a blatantly federal program. But make no doubt about it, the end result is the same, dreaded, national ID system that privacy advocates have been fighting for years. This is happening FAST. In fact, the process is already underway. Betty Serian of AAMVA stated on January 14th at a press conference: “We want to move swiftly. As swiftly as we can. First and foremost, we want a short-term legislative agenda which we hope to move forward within the next thirty to sixty days to include such things as uniformity, security features on licenses that would be standardized across the states.” Not only would a national ID system be rampant with fraud and abuse, but mistakes made by bureaucrats alone would make citizens’ lives a living hell. Currently, 30% of the information stored in federal databases is incorrect. A single mistake on your new national ID card could make it impossible for you to drive a car, apply for a credit card, or even get a job. Moreover, a national ID system WILL NOT PRODUCE A SAFER MORE SECURE NATION. ID cards can be forged and information can be falsified—just as the terrorists did on September 11. Bottom line: the choice between liberty and security is a false one. Choose liberty, and you’re just as secure. Choose security, and you’re no safer—possibly even less safe. Government officials simply want to be able to track your every movement, purchase and doctor’s visit from cradle to grave. We need to act FAST—before we are all forced to “show our papers.” Please read the Action to Take below. **Action to Take** 1. Call your state legislators and urge them to do everything in their power to stop your state’s participation in a national ID system. This means blocking the sharing of any and all information collected by your state with other states or the federal government—and, of course, blocking any establishment of a centralized national database. 2. Call both of your Senators and your Representative and demand that they vote against any legislation that would help create a national ID system. Such legislation would include funding for states to create a uniform driver ’s license or a data-sharing system. House Switchboard: (202) 225-3121. Senate Switchboard: (202) 224-3121. 3. We're all being encouraged to travel after Sept. 11, yet officials throw up disincentives everywhere. Not too long ago, officials where I live proposed an additional room tax on hotels, to raise money to be used to promote the benefits of visiting our city. |

I ran into a old friend from High School that works for the local news paper for this region of SD. I said some think about the new rule about RV and Motorhomes stopping at the weight stations. I said that a number of travelers are looking to by pass SD due to the new Nazi state of law. She said that they have been looking for issues that have come up due to changes because of terrorism. She said that she would check into it and give me a call. I did get her work number to follow up with. |

Illinois Legislature (read:campground owners) have decided that you can't park anywhere except at approved parks. No Wal-mart, Sam's Club, roasdside rests, wide spots, uncle Harry's hay field. Several people were hassssled near Joliet, when they had only been inside a market buying groceries. There were an extensive set of posts about it several months back. Cheers...JJ |

I was on my way home with the bus, with a temporary in-transit permit. It wasn't registerd yet as a private coach or rv. It was weighed and I think the fee was $20.00 was a fuel charge and $15.00 was a fee based on weight (or the other way round). Scale weight was 27,000 lbs. They also looked at the copy of the title and the bill of sale. |

That would have been easy. I filled up in Mitchell, SD. Wish I'd thought of that. DaveD |
