The U.K.'s FirstGroup is buying Laidlaw International (LI), the U.S. operator of Greyhound buses, for $3.6 billion, including debt. FirstGroup said it would pay $35.25 per share of Laidlaw. Shares of Laidlaw rose $2.68, or 8%, to $34.40 in morning trading. Greyhound could find itself back on the deal market soon, however. One analyst speculated that FirstGroup would move to sell off the bus line, which made up 40% of Laidlaw's revenue last year. "Owners other than FirstGroup might be able to bring a stronger skill set" to that business, J.P. Morgan analyst Damian Brewer told MarketWatch.com. Greyhound was founded in 1914 and carries passengers to 3,100 different places around the country. more and more. |

That would be Henleys Group from England. Far as I know Volvo owns all or nearly all of Prevost now. |

No I don't think so - both Laidlaw and FirstGroup are primarily school bus operators. "They" are saying that the Greyhound business isn't necessarily a good fit and they may sell it off once the deal is done. Who knows what would happen then. Wanna buy it? |

BTW, I'll go waay out on a limb and forecast that in the coming decade the bus business will improve a lot. Ya'll probably know that buses are the most efficient fuel consumers per passenger mile, more than any other vehicle. Yep. More than trains, planes, cars or spaceships. Maybe not rickshaws. That's fully loaded in commercial service of course. I'm almost certain I remember that right. I should look it up and verify, but heck it's Saturday nite. I'll wing it... |
