A lister on EBay claims that because he made a simple engine modification his bus gets 12-14 MPG. I figure he must have put injectors in that pump less fuel for any given stroke, like having a smaller diameter piston in them. What are the limits to this type of tuning? Obviously we don't want to have to back up a hill because reverse is the lowest gear we have and it won't make it in first.

I don't buy 12 out of a fishbowl.

Could he have restricted the fuel return slightly?

Could he have used a slightly smaller restriction on the fuel return line?

This bus has been listed previously and he was asked how he got that kind of mileage. His reply was that it had extra injectors installed. That because of this the engine was never starved for fuel and it actually increased the mileage. Take it for what you will.

extra injectors would use more fuel.

a finite ammount of fuel can be burned in said cyl.....the rest gets shot right out the exhaust.

guy is full of shit trying to sell a fishbowl ( small very small market)

"( small very small market)"

Most any bus on ebay sold to someone to convert is a very small market. LOL.

I have throw the BS flag. No way he can get that kinda milage out of a fishbowl (standard or automatic). I have a 74 Fishbowl and the absolute best I ever got was 8mpg with 6v92/V730 4 1/8 gears and small injectors.

I would like to know how you add extra injectors in a 2 stroke diesel head!! I have worked on these engines since the 70's and have never seen "extra injectors".

I thought BS also. A lot of really clever people have been tinkering with Detroits for a lot of years. Of course he might have put a couple of those fuel polarizing magnets in series on the inlet side.

Cutting the fuel back in a detroit isn't going to help fuel mileage much, unless the injectors were too big to begin with. Less fuel and you have to push the throttle down more to maintain speed, as the torque is lower. If he had a vs2-8 or vs2-6 Overdrive trans- he could get 12mpg running at reasonable speeds on relatively flat terrain. Some of the people with 06 and 4905 claim they get over 10. Small injectors and cruising at 1400 or 1500 and 2 valve head and std. timing might do it.
